Yellow journalism of LUBP

The Mother of all claims: Mumtaz Qadri was a Deobandi

LUBP's claim: Mumtaz Qadri was a Deobandi.

https://lubpak.com/archives/329352
"Abu Bakr Chishti: The word ‘Qadri’ in one’s name is not a certificate that one is a Sunni Sufi or Barelvi. Just as every resident of Jhang city is not a supporter or member of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, not every Qadri is a Sunni Barelvi. Mumaz belongs to a Deobandi family of Bhara Kahu, Rawalpindi. He was a member of Deobandi terror outfit Sipah-e-Sahaba (ASWJ). In the meanwhile he also participated in Ilyas Qadri’s Dawat-e-Islami and added Qadri to his name. However, he maintained contacts with takfiri Deobandi khawarij who found him a recruit who could be used to murder Salmaan Taseer while shifting the blame on peaceful Sunni Barelvi community."

Reality Check:

Qadri's family is Deobandi but he converted to Barelvism.

http://www.thefridaytimes.com/14012011/page7.shtml
"It turns out that Qadri was a convert from the Deobandi to Barelvi school of thought. His parents and siblings are Deobandi. They live in Rawalpindi and belong to the nearby Bara Kahu area. Mumtaz adopted the name Qadri out of respect for the Barelvi Dawat-e-Islami leader Ilyas Qadri."

"Like most converts Qadri had a passion for instigating religious debate and on two occasions he had pointed his weapon on colleagues with whom he himself had initiated some controversial debate. He was declared unfit for sensitive duty in a 2004 report prepared by the then SSP Special Branch, Nasir Khan Durrani. His name was among 11 officers declared ‘unsuitable’ for high security assignments. Mr Durrani is now serving as Additional IG of the Special Branch."

Murder of Justice Arif Iqbal Bhatti

LUBP's claim: Sipah Sahaba killed Justice Arif Iqbal Bhatti.

https://lubpak.com/archives/36490
"Previously a daring and honest judge Arif Iqbal Bhatti was killed by Islamo-fascists of the Sipah-e-Sahaba in 1997 when he acquitted two innocent Christians accused of blasphemy to the Quran."

Reality Check:

To be fair, LUBP published my comment. https://lubpak.com/archives/36490#comment-2195395

Murder of Maulana Habibullah Mukhtar

LUBP's claim: Intra-deobandi fighting led to the killing.

https://lubpak.com/archives/322974

"Another well known case in the 1990s was the murder of Deobandi scholar Maulana Habibullah Mukhtar near Guru Mandir in 1997. The police managed to arrest two suspects, Tanveer Abbas and Saleem Jaffer, who were later acquitted by the court. They believe that the main suspect, a man identified as Rana, was hiding in Iran. Around a year or so ago, Abbas was murdered in Rizvia. The police suspect that he might have been killed in a mugging."

Murder of Mufti Shamzai

LUBP's claim: On the instigation of Mufti Taqi Usmani and Ahmad Ludhivani, Amjad Farooqi, a Sipah Sahaba militant, killed a moderate Deobandi cleric Mufti Shamzai.

https://lubpak.com/archives/233399
"Pakistani and international media conveniently ignored the fact that Amjad Farooqi Deobandi was last seen in Karachi’s Quaidabad suburb in the Tariq Hotel, on the same day (30 May 2004) that Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai, a leading Sunni Deobandi cleric and head of Islamic religious school Jamia Binoria, was assassinated (Source). Amjad Farooqi Deobandi was a member of the Lashkar-i-Jhangvi (aka Sipah Sahaba Taliban), a banned group of sectarian assassins who target Shia, Sunni Barelvi, Ahmadi and Christian communities. Farooqi had been tasked by none else than a leading (Takfiri) Deobandi cleric to assassinate Mufti Shamzai."

13 Sep 2015: "KARACHI: Police on Sunday claimed to have arrested an alleged target killer, associated with a political party, who had killed Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai and three other religious scholars in Karachi, Samaa reported Sunday.

In May 2004, renowned religious scholar Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai was assassinated in gun attack on his car outside his home a few yards from the Jamia Binnoria in Jamshed Town of Karachi.

Wasi Haider son of Hassan Raza has made some shocking revelations during initial interrogation. He has confessed to killing Mufti Shamzai and seven other people. He also murdered Maulan Abdul Majeed Deenpuri, Hafiz Muhammad Ehsan Ali Shah and Mufti Sahel Muhammad Qazi in 2013,” a police official told Samaa. According to police, the accused was arrested during an encounter with police in Federal Industrial Area."

Some details about Wasi Haider, MQM's sectarian killer.

Lynching of a Christian couple in Kot Radha Kishan

LUBP's claim: Sipah Sahaba was responsible.

https://lubpak.com/archives/326465
"On 4 November, a local mullah, an imam of a Deobandi mosque in Kot Radha Kishan, a small town near Lahore, announced on the mosque loudspeakers that a Christian couple had burnt a copy of the Koran and hurled it into a rubbish bin. He told the people to go to the village where couple lived and kill them."

Reality Check:

Maulvi Mohammad Hussain, the cleric who instigated the mob, appears to be a Barelvi as just few days before this incident, he had hosted a prominent Barelvi scholar Mufti Khadim Hussein Rizivi for the Urs of Ilm Din.

http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/6/20/blasphemy-in-pakistan-anatomy-of-a-lynching.html
"Meanwhile, about a mile away from the kiln, in the narrow, red-brick lanes of the village, preparations were underway for a grand celebration as local clerics prepared to welcome Muhammad Khadim Hussain Rizvi, a well-known Barelvi Muslim scholar, to an Urs, a traditional South Asian celebration of the life and works of men considered to be Sufi saints. This event, organized by a religious political party, honored Ilmuddin, a Muslim man from Lahore who, in one of the most high-profile blasphemy cases ever to occur in then-undivided India, stabbed to death the publisher of a religiously charged pamphlet titled Rangeela Rasul (The Promiscuous Prophet) in 1929."

...."What is unclear is who decided to take the matter to Muhammad Hussain, the local maulvi (cleric). Just four days earlier, Hussain had hosted the Urs for Ilmuddin"

Murder of Rashid and Sajid Emmanuel

LUBP's claim: Sipah Sahaba was responsible.

https://lubpak.com/archives/19428
"Children of General Zia-ul-Haq, i.e., terrorists of the Sipah-e-Sahaba, under the patronage of Pakistan’s ISI and Shahbaz Sharif’s government in the Punjab province, are back in action once again. Today (19 July 2010), Muslim extremists belonging to the Sipah-e-Sahaba (an affiliate terrorist organisation of the Taliban and Jamaat-e-Islami) shot dead Rahid Emmanuel and Sajjid Emmanuel in broad daylight in front of hundreds of people in district courts compound in Faisalabad today."

Reality check:

An initial report by Dunya TV suggested that the killer, Rana Maqsood Ahmad, was allegedly a member of a "banned organization".

http://dunyanews.tv/print_news_urdu.php?nid=29453&catid=2&flag=d

A year later, Barelvi activists of Sunni Tehrik protested outside the court and demanded Maqsood's acquittal.

http://tribune.com.pk/story/154168/rule-of-law-death-for-killing-two-accused-of-blasphemy/
22 Apr 2011: FAISALABAD: An Anti-Terrorism Court on Monday found Maqsood Ahmad guilty of killing two blasphemy accused in 2010 and sentenced him to death on four counts. Ahmed, a resident of Chak 204 Rakh Branch (RB), was brought to the court amid tight security. A large crowd, including many Sunni Tehrik activits, had gathered in front of the court. Many of the activists expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict. ST’s Mahmood Ahmed said they would soon file an appeal against the verdict at the appropriate forum. He said the man had killed two blasphemers and deserved better treatment."

Burning of Ahmadis' factory in Jehlum

LUBP's claim:  Tahir Ashrafi’s hate mongering provokes attacks on Ahmadiyya

https://lubpak.com/archives/344131
https://lubpak.com/archives/343932
https://lubpak.com/archives/343877
After systematic anti-Ahmadi propaganda by Tahir Ashrafi and other hate clerics, in which Ahmadi factory owners had been falsely alleged of blasphemy, a group of extremist Deobandis and other Sunnis attacked a Chipboard factory in Jhelum on 20 November 2015. The factory was burnt to ashes. The fanatic Deobandi clerics and crowds also tried to burn the Ahmadi, Sunni and Shia employees of the factory alive.
After burning down the factory owned, the extremist mob ransacked an Ahmadi Mosque in Kala Gojran (Jehlum), cleansed it by burning its property in the streets and then offered Asar prayer inside. Now it’s a Deobandi Mosque!

Reality check:

Exhumation of Bhooro Bheel

LUBP's claim: "it was purely an SSP-ASWJ act."

https://lubpak.com/archives/286693
"Dawn went on to quote “Maulvi Mithan, the prayer leader in a local mosque” as claiming: “The town was shut in protest by the Muslims.”
Maulvi Mithan is not a Shia nor a Brelvi. He is a Takfiri Deobandi mullah. And who are the “members of the Muslim community”? Did any Shia take part in it? No; it was purely an SSP-ASWJ act.
You can imagine what the rest of the Pakistani newspapers wrote: They simply did not mention even the word “seminary,” let alone even alluding to “SSP-ASWJ”. It took an Indian publication to quote a police officer who during his press briefing said,
“The incident was caused by some clerics of the extremist outfit of Ahle Sunaat Wal Jamaat, but later other Muslims joined in and dug up the body and threw it away.”

Reality Check:

Sipah Sahaba was one of the religious parties who took part in the exhumation. It was a Barelvi cleric, Qari Abdul Basit, the adminsitator of Jamia Hanafia Sultan-ul-Madaris, who instigated local Muslims to take this action. Members of other religious groups (including Sipah Sahaba) and Pir Pagara's PML-F also took part in this act.

http://www.humanrights.asia/news/urgent-appeals/AHRC-UAC-133-2013
Oct 9, 2013: "The local Muslim religious leaders tried to instigate the other Muslims by announcing on the loudspeakers of the mosque that a non-Muslim was buried in a Muslim graveyard, pleading that it was against the teaching of Islam to allow a non-Muslim to be buried alongside Muslims in the same graveyard. These religious fundamentalists also invited the students of various Madressas, (Muslim seminaries) from nearby towns like Jhuddo and Matli, who came armed with sophisticated weapons and posed a great danger to the law and order situation of the area. They later led the mob to the graveyard, exhumed the body and then dragged it to a road side where it was dumped. The body remained there for over eight hours until the relatives buried the corpse in another place.

A Muslim cleric has also issued a Fatwa, a Muslim declaration, that Hindus cannot be buried in the Muslim graveyards to justify the act of hooliganism against Hindus. Please find in the present appeal the picture of the Fatwa issued by a Muslim cleric sitting in Faisalabad, Punjab province."

A copy of a fatwa issued by Maulana Usman Ghani of  a Barelvi madrassa, Jamiah Rizvia Mazharul Islam, Jhang Bazar, Faisalabad, Punjab province, and distributed in Badin by Qari Basit, administrator of a Barelvi madrassa Jamia Hanafia Sultan-ul-Madaris of Pangrio, Badin. The fatwa states that Hindus are not allowed to be buried in Muslim graveyard and it is permissible to exhume a Hindu buried in a Muslim graveyard.

14 Oct 2013: HYDERABAD: Political and religious leaders of Pangrio town have rejected claims about desecration of a Bheel’s body and accused Sindhi nationalist parties and a local landlord of inciting communal hatred between the two communities who have been living in peace for decades. Speaking at a press conference at the Hyderabad Press Club on Monday, local PML-F leader Mohammad Peeral Khoso, Maulvi Mohammad Mithan Khoso, Maulvi Abdul Quddus Naqshbandi and leader of Pangrio chapter of Sunni Tehreek Rana Sajid Ali Qadri said the landlord and nationalist parties were defaming Muslims over the burial for their vested interests."

"The crowd had come together through the efforts of one Qari Abdul Basit, the administrator of a madrasa in Pangrio. Working through local mosques, he had distributed a fatwa against the burial of non-Muslims in Muslim graveyards. He also had prayer leaders announce that those who had exhumed Bhoro Bheel’s body had discharged their religious duty and had not committed any crime." ......
Sultanul Madaris, a madrasa set up by the settlers, is said to have played a pivotal role in fanning religious emotions over Bhoro Bheel’s burial. In another instance of outside influence, Basit, the madrasa’s administrator, had obtained the fatwa against Bhoro Bheel’s burial from a madarasa in Faisalabad."

Exhumation of an Ahmadi girl

LUBP's claim: Deobandis did it and Najam Sethi was complicit.

https://lubpak.com/archives/286693
"Having killed thousands of Shias, demolished countless schools and shrines, and kidnapped and forcibly converted hundreds of Christian and Hindu women, the Takfiri-Deobandis have been embolden by the realization that they are above the law. Now they have decided to take on the dead too. They have found their accomplices all over. When Najam Sethi took over as Punjab’s caretaker-chief minister, he made this statement, “Nobody is my friend and nobody is my relative during the time I am the Chief Minister of Punjab”. Soon after he took over, the Takfiris went into action in Kasur, only 30 kilometres from Sethi’s office, and carried out a violent campaign to have an Ahmadi girl thrown out of a ‘Muslim’ graveyard. Many Ahmadis appealed to Sethi to stand by the dead girl’s human rights. Sethi’s response was typical of his ‘principled’ politics: It was his own subordinates, government officials, who supervised the removal of the Ahmadi corpse from the graveyard."

Reality Check:

Deobandis were indeed involved but they were not the only ones involved. The fatwa for exhumation was issued by a Barelvi cleric, Saadat Ali Qadri who was the administrator of Jamia Hanafi, Kasur

http://archives.dailytimes.com.pk/main/02-Apr-2006/ahmadi-girl-reburied-after-extremists-object
2 Apr 2006: LAHORE: Local authorities dug up the grave of an Ahmadi girl in a Muslim graveyard in Chanda Singh village, Kasur, 10 days after her death and moved her body to an Ahmadi cemetery under pressure from clerics. Kasur DPO Captain (r) Mobeen Ahmed supervised the reburial on March 18, Daily Times has learnt. District police officials confirmed the report and conceded that it was done under pressure from the Majlis-e-Tahafuz-e-Khatam-e-Nabuwat and local clerics.
Nadia Hanif, 17, died of an illness on March 8. She had been running an SOS village school and used to teach kids the Quran. "No one objected to her being buried here at the time," her elder brother told Daily Times. Several Muslims attended her funeral, he added, though the local imam refused to offer Namaz-e-Janaza for the girl. After the funeral, extremists started protesting against her burial in a Muslim graveyard. A local cleric also got a fatwa from Saadat Ali Qadri, who runs a seminary, stating that Ahmadis cannot be buried in a Muslim graveyard and digging up the body is permissible."

Saadat Ali Qadri was the administrator of (Barelvi)Jamia Hanafi, Kasur: http://search.jang.com.pk/NewsDetail.aspx?ID=161074

No organized Shia militancy in Pakistan after 1990s

LUPB's claim: After the demise of Sipah-e-Muhammad in 1990s, there has never been a terrorist militia among Shias of Pakistan.

https://lubpak.com/archives/322974

https://lubpak.com/archives/306531
"The Sipah-e-Muhammad Pakistan (SMP) is a phantom organization which was created by Pakistani establishment to get rid of some rogue Jihadist Deobandi militants and was soon annihiliated by the same establishment in mid 1990s. The orgnaization no longer exists and its only leader Ghulam Raza Naqvi is languishing in a jail in Punjab for more than 20 years without being given a fiar hearing in a court of law. Of course, no such organization (SMP) exists today. If a Shia extremist group existed today, then surely in addition to 22,000 Shia Muslims killed so far, we would also have witnessed deadbodies of 22,000 takfiri Deobandi terrorists and hate clerics."

Reality check:

Unlike Deobandi militants, Shia militants prefer to keep a low profile (no public declaration about claiming responsibility of their attacks) and for sure the latter have contributed much less than the former to the sectarian violence in Pakistan. Sipah-e-Muhammad, the Shia militant outfit, faced a strong crackdown in 1990s and virtually died down but its splinter groups (such as Mehdi Force) have been involved in attacks on Deobandi clerics and militants. Apart from Sipah-e-Muhammad and its splinters such as Lashkar-e-Mehdi, some Shia members of MQM have also been involved in sectarian killings. Shia leadership in Pakistan has publicly neither supported nor condemned terrorists of Sipah Muhammad and affiliates; their stance is that of ambivalence or condonement.

Bombing of Sipah Sahaba meeting in Multan (October 2004)

http://archives.dailytimes.com.pk/national/08-Oct-2004/sipah-e-muhammad-prime-suspect-in-multan-bombing-investigators
8 Oct 2004: "LAHORE: Investigators said banned organisation Sipah-e-Muhammad Pakistan (SMP) was the prime suspect in the Multan bombing on Thursday. A major crackdown was launched against SMP activists throughout Punjab and eight were arrested in Multan and its adjoining areas, official sources told Daily Times.
"The government formed 20 teams of officers from intelligence and security agencies for a crackdown in various parts of the province," sources said. "Among militant Shia organisations, only SMP had the capability to carry out such an attack," sources said, "but the SMP has been quite inactive since the arrest of its chief, Ghulam Raza Naqvi. Many of its frontline activists have fled the country."
The bombing of the Lahore Sessions Court in 1997, in which Sipah-e-Sahaba leader Maulana Ziaur Rehman Farooqi died, showed that SMP had the capability to use remotely triggered explosive devices. Though the man who executed that bombing, Muharram Ali, was hanged to death, the mastermind Dr Qaiser Abbas is still at large. Dr Qaiser is an explosives specialist. He fled Pakistan after the incident.
"If the SMP is behind the incident, it means Dr Qaiser is back in Pakistan because he is the only SMP man who can make such devices," said a security official. He said security agencies were surprised by the SMP's re-emergence. "We though the SMP had collapsed after the murder of its supreme leader Murid Abbas Yazdani and the arrest of Naqvi."
The rest of SMP's prominent leaders and activists fled the country. Maulana Zulqarnain with a Rs 1 million bounty on his head escaped to a neighbouring country in 1999. Rizwan Haider, with Rs 500,000 on his head, is also settled abroad. Muhammad Ali, Naqvi's right hand man, was arrested with him. He broke jail and escaped, but was recaptured.
"The main question is who is leading SMP and how has it reorganised itself?" security officials said.
AS Qamar adds: Police detained Ansar Kazmi, a Shia, for interrogation. He lives in the area where the incident occurred.

12 Oct 2004: "Iran-Pakistan border has been sealed and police in Balochistan have been put on high alert to arrest Multan bombing mastermind Dr. Qaiser Raza, a militant of Shia group Sipah-e-Muhammad. Sikandar Hayat, the district police officer of Multan, announced the arrest of another militant Asad Abbas Shah for providing financial assistance to the terrorists. He said police investigation had revealed that Dr. Raza had stayed at Shah’s home for nearly a month and a white car used in the bombing had been seen at his residence at Kumharanwala, Multan. However Shah’s brother and family members denied the report.
Hayat said: “We are confident that Dr. Raza is the mastermind of the Multan bombing. He also planned to kill Maulana Azam Tariq in Lahore through Mehram Ali. We sought help from the government of Balochistan to prevent him from crossing the border.” He said that one of the robbers of the white car, Ali Taqi, was also taken into custody.""

4 Apr 2005:
Crime Investigation Department announced on Sunday arrest of five activists of a sectarian organization, Baquiatullah, an off-shoot of the banned Tehrik-i-Jaffaria Pakistan, and seized a huge quantity of weapons.

CID DSP Raja Umer Khattab told reporters that the suspects had escaped after an encounter with police near Ancholi in Federal B Area a few days ago.
...

Three men, Muzaffar Ali alias Baloch, Mustafa Kirmani and Asghar Ali, were arrested when weapons were found in the car.

The three led police to their hideouts from where Shujaat Ali and Raza Ali were arrested.

Mr Khattab said that Baquiatullah had been formed in the mid-90s by Muzaffar Kirmani who was later killed. After his death, the command of the organization was taken over by his brother Mustafa Kirmani who was arrested in the operation on Saturday night.

Some other members of the group, including Imtiaz Jafri, Abbas Ali Ashur and Ali Raza Farishta, had been arrested earlier, he added.
....
He said the suspects had been wanted in four cases registered in Gulbahar, Khwaja Ajmer Nagri and Buffer Zone police stations, relating to the killing of 25 people, including activists of the banned Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan.

4 Mar 2007: "CID officials said the militant, belonging to the Sipah-i-Muhammad Pakistan, was wanted for his alleged involvement in several high-profile killings and sectarian attacks.
Hammad Riaz Naqvi, they said, was arrested after an encounter in Aswan Town of the Malir district.
They said that acting on a tip, a police party which reached the area saw four men on two motorcycles entering the locality.
“Police warned them to surrender, but they opened fire and tried to escape. Police returned fire and arrested one of them, Hammad Riaz Naqvi,” said CID SP Raja Umer Khitab.
He said the accused lived in the same area. Three of his accomplices, who escaped, were identified as Askari, Rauf and Qalbe Abbas.
Police also claimed to have found a bag in Naqvi’s possession containing two hand grenades, a Kalashnikov assault rifle, a pistol and ammunition.
“He was directly and indirectly involved in several high-profile killings and attacks.”
The CID official said the accused was a member of an inter-provincial gang of the banned outfit and had carried out several attacks in Punjab and Sindh since 2001.
Preliminary investigations, he said, showed that the man was involved in the murders of Maulana Azam Tariq in Islamabad and Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai in Karachi.
Mufti Shamzai was shot dead in May 2004, while Azam Tariq, the former head of the banned Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan, was gunned down with his driver and three bodyguards in Oct 2003. At the time of his death, Azam Tariq was a member of parliament.
The officials also accused the same people of killing Mufti Mohammad Jameel and Nazeer Taunsvi in an attack in New Town in Sept 2004. In a separate attack, Mufti Attiqur Rehman, his son Ammar and Maulana Irshadul Haq were killed in Preedy area in June 2005.
They said that the same group, including the suspect, were allegedly involved in the explosions at a gathering in Multan to mark the first death anniversary of Maulana Azam Tariq in Oct 2004, which killed 53 people and injured more than 100.
SP Khitab said the gang’s first attack was on motor-mechanic Dakhtiar, an activist of Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), in 2001, who was shot dead.
Some weeks later, they attacked Haroon Qasmi, a leader and legal adviser of the banned SSP in Ferozabad area, in which the latter was injured. A year later, they attacked Mr Qasmi’s father Mohammad Ishaq and a brother. Mr Ishaq was killed. The accused attacked Mr Qasmi the third time in Jan 2005 killing him and a police constable.
The CID official described the gang as one of the most feared terrorist group in the country. According to him, it was headed by Dr Muntazir of Punjab.
“Dr Muntazir specifies targets and order others to plan the attack,” said a police official.
He said that Qalbe Abbas, who escaped after the encounter, was a police constable in Islamabad. He got himself transferred to Sindh Police in Karachi after the murder of Maulana Azam Tariq.
“Qalbe Abbas had mysteriously disappeared a couple of weeks earlier after the arrest of two of his gang members -- Mudassir and Mohammad Ali -- from Islamabad,” said a police official.
Sources said that Qalbe Abbas had the last posting as a police guard at the foreign affairs office in Karachi. The CID police had launched an extensive search operation in cooperation with Islamabad CID and Punjab police."

25 Aug 2008:  "Background interviews with various police and intelligence officials revealed that militants of two banned outfits, Lashkar-i-Jhangvi (LJ) and Sipah-i-Muhammad Pakistan (SMP), have returned to the city and are now busy in regrouping and expanding their network." ....
"while the LJ militants have links with some religious parties, some local leaders of a major political party were allegedly patronising the SMP militants.
Quoting information that had been gleaned from some suspects, sources said that a wanted militant, Ali Mustehsan, is reportedly operating the network of the SMP in the city and is acting on the directives of Zulqarnain Haider, who had recently returned to Karachi and succeeded in reuniting the two factions of the SMP, Baqiatullah and Pasban-i-Islam. They said that other SMP militants including Muhib alias Yawar Abbas, Mohsin Mehdi, Hashim Raza, Asim Zaidi, Rashid alias Hasan, Sarfaraz and Azhar, are also in the city and planning a major strike."

3 Jan 2011: Karachi: The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Capital City Police has busted a key sectarian network, the Mehdi force, which operated under the umbrella of the banned organisation Sipah-e-Mohammad. .......
Tanvir Abbas alias Kashif alias Mehdi along with Abrar Hussain, Pervez Zaidi, Riffat alias Jehangir and Hasnain Abbas were arrested in the first encounter near NED University with a vehicle with fake official numberplates (GS-0022) early Sunday morning. Later, Sikandar alias Sajid, Ali Mehdi alias Bubblo and Kumail were arrested during separate raids. All eight suspects hail from the city and most of them were residents of Orangi town, Buffer zone, Malir and New Karachi. They have been accused of being involved in at least a dozen sectarian target killings, including the murder of three doctors. The group targeted sympathisers and members of the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Jaish-e-Mohammad....Describing the modus operandi of the Mehdi force, Khattab told The Express Tribune that it was a well-trained extremist unit that had various sources of funding. “The mastermind Tanvir Abbas used to pay Rs15,000 as a salary to his men who would pull the trigger and Rs8,000 to those who conducted surveillance of the targets,” he said, adding that the suspect would also organise weapons and explosives training to the men at facilities in hideouts in the northern areas, including Parachinar and Gilgit. The group was also alleged to be involved in numerous car snatchings and robberies. According to the police, Tanvir Abbas had on the directives of another cell chief Ashraf set up the group in April 2009 and a total of Rs7 million had been spent on training and equipment.....Sources within the SIU said, however, that leads were pointing towards groups operating in Iran. Also, a clear link between the Mehdi force and Majlise Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), a local religious organisation has also been uncovered."

11 Jan 2011: "The alleged killer of Maulana Nisar, who was killed on August 18, 2010, has been identified by two witnesses in court on Tuesday. Syed Sikander Rizvi, an alleged member of banned militant organisation Sipah-e-Muhammad, was presented before the judicial magistrate central, Ahsan A Malik, in an identification parade by the CID police. Witnesses Faisal and Imran identified the culprit. The accused told the court that he was driving the car which was used in the murder. His accomplice, Shafat Hussain, was the one who fired at Maulana Nisar, he added. After the parade, the court sent Rizvi to jail on a judicial remand till January 20. Earlier, the police presented alleged Sipah-e-Muhammad militants, Tanweer Hussain Naqvi alias Kashif, Abrar Hussain Naqvi, Syed Pervez Zaidi, Rafat Raza alias Jehangir, Hussain Abbas alias Faisal, Syed Sikander Rizvi and Syed Ali Mehdi, before different courts. All courts sent the accused to jail on a judicial remand till January 20. Meanwhile, the court also asked for challans issued in these cases."

14 Apr 2011: "The JIT has also mentioned the case of an alleged target killer Syed Ali Mehdi alias Salman hailing from Sipah-e-Muhammad. The interesting fact about Mehdi’s episode is that he was a professional hockey player and played for KESC. The KESC did not pay him for six months. In 2009 he met Syed Ibrar Hussain Rizvi alias Sultan, Nomi and Mushtaq who asked Mehdi to work for Shia sect and also bought a Honda 125 worth Rs 37000 for him.

He pointed out to Ibrar Rizvi about one Moavia to Ibrar Rizvi who later on in May 2010 killed Moavia at a shop. He was given Rs4500 as reward for this pointing out.

Moreover, in reaction to Shia Scholar Mirza Yousaf’s son namely Mirza Khadim Hussain, Ibrar Ahamd Rizvi called Mehdi to come at Baqai Hospital. There they did the recky of a black car who was owned by Dr Shakoor (allegedly affiliated with Sipah-e-Sahaba). Upon Mehdi’s pointing, Rizvi killed Dr Shakoor and Mehdi got Rs5000 as reward from Ibrar Rizvi.

In another case Muhammad Imran Puncharwala was also killed by Ibrar Rizvi upon recky of Mehdi, who got Rs2000 as reward for this work. “In the month of March 2010, Ibrar Ahmad Rizvi came at Babul Ilem Imam Bargah, Karachi and told him regarding murder of Mufti Saeed Jalalpuri (affiliated with Tahrik-e-Khatam-e-Nabuwat Pakistan) at Abul Asfahani Road, near Paradise Bakery Karachi in a car. Haider and Samar told him regarding murder of one owner of medical store situated at Petal Wali Gali, Golimar, Karachi”, says the report. Mehdi disclosed that the persons killed/injured above were activated/ aggressive against Shia sect that’s why in the interest of Shia sect they were assassinated/injured. The other reasons of sectarian killing of such persons were that they had killed the persons affiliated with Ahl-e-Tashiee community."

7 May 2011: "Sipah-e-Muhammad Pakistan and Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan – two organisations banned by the Pakistani government in 2001 on charges of fomenting sectarianism and killing in the name of religion – are back in business: both groups have been organising in the University of Karachi (KU) with impunity, allegedly with the patronage of teachers. Wall chalking and graffiti on many walls of the KU bears testament to the presence of both Sipah-e-Muhammad and Sipah-e-Sahaba. What’s more, however, is the distribution of leaflets with hate-inciting material and altercations between the two groups over mosque and prayer spaces."

26 May 2011: "More than 200 activists of Sipah-e-Muhammad, trained from Iran and heavily armed, are hunting down workers of their rival sect, confessed Ali Muntazir, an activist of Sipah-e-Muhammad arrested last week from the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Sindh Police. Muntazir confessed to have killed more than 20 activists of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), formerly the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan. His victims included Rehan and Nadeem, both killed in 2010 in the jurisdiction of Airport police station. “Our high ups instructed us to kill ASWJ leaders and activists, and provided us with weapons and a list of leaders,” he told investigators. The terrorist also revealed that Sipah-e-Muhammad activists are imparted training in Iran, and like his other comrades, he made several visits for the purpose."

4 June 2011: "Investigators looking into the daylight killing of a Saudi consulate official in Defence Phase VI on May 16 have ruled out the possibility of al Qaeda having a hand in the attack. “[Al Qaeda] has the capability and ruthlessness to bomb the entire Saudi consulate building, but that didn’t happen,” said a counter terrorism official while talking to The Express Tribune. He added that had al Qaeda been involved, a ‘spectacular attack’ would have been carried out. The diplomat, Hasan M. al Kahtani, was shot dead by men on two motorcycles near the Saudi consulate...... "Officials who spoke with The Express Tribune say they have found some strong clues that hint in the direction of militants within the Ahle Tasheeh sect. They say that just as there are Tehreek-i-Taliban-linked mostly Sunni militants, there are extremists active in the other sect as well, who are operating in the city. The proscribed Sipah-e-Mohammad group, for example, was formed as a reaction to the attacks on the minority sect’s followers in Pakistan. Although, the Sipah-e-Mohammad is no longer anything like what it was back in the day, these extremists now operate under new names such as the ‘Mehdi force’. They are believed to have formed small cells of three to four members each. Law-enforcement members also say that in the past some youth of a campus-based sectarian organisation were also found to be involved in terrorism. Some allegedly even confessed that they received militant training in a neighbouring country that was not Afghanistan."

21 Nov 2011:  KARACHI: "Asif alias Munna, the main suspect in a futile attack on the Saudi Consulate back in May, was killed in an encounter as he tried to evade arrest on Sunday. His three companions are in police custody. Police said the encounter ensued near Rabiya City in Gulistan-e-Jauhar when they raided the area with the help of Asif’s companions, Zaki alias Kamran, Mohsin and Mohammad Ali Kazmi. They were arrested from the Eidgah area the same day. Crime Branch officials said that the suspects were with the banned outfit, Mehdi Force. They confessed to being involved in sectarian violence during interrogation. Their two biggest transgressions, however, were an attack on a mosque at Sakhi Hassan in 2010 and when they threw two hand grenades at the Saudi consulate building on May 11. While no one was hurt at the consulate, five people were injured at the mosque"......"Earlier this year in January, the Karachi police’s Special Investigation Unit arrested eight people who worked with these four suspects and recovered a huge cache of weapons. The eight men arrested initially were said to be hardcore militants of the Mehdi Force. The accused included the group’s mastermind, Tanvir Abbas. They were accused of being involved in at least a dozen sectarian target killings, including the murder of three doctors. The group targeted sympathisers and members of the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Jesh-e-Mohammad. Their attacks always prompted a strong backlash from the groups they targeted."

13 Aug 2012: "It has been learned that activists of Sipah-e-Muhammad Pakistan (SMP) and Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and Sindhu Desh Liberation Army (SDLA) are carrying out their activities openly in many universities."..... "Sources claimed that SMP have sitting points in front of the cafeteria of Karachi University and have formed pickets on the roof of the cafeteria to provide shelter to their activists while activists of SSP were openly arranging gatherings in different departments. Both organizations have chalked their slogans and their names on the walls of Karachi University and are distributing their literature amongst the students. It is pertinent to note here that the government of Pakistan had imposed a ban on the literature of both these organizations as it was fanning sectarian hatred. Sources further claimed that these SMP activists conducting these activities were not students of Karachi University and visited the university only to run their affairs. About 100 activists of SMP used to sit in front of the cafeteria while 10 to 15 armed activists of SMP were positioned in the surroundings of that cafeteria to provide protection to the other activists. Even though members of SMP have been apprehended in different cases by the Karachi police, they still continue to conduct these activities with impunity. Ina particular case, a member of SMP was arrested by the police in 2010 and heavy weaponry was recovered from his vehicle. Sources claim that this very person is now leading campaigns in Karachi University and has openly admitted to being a shooter for the banned outfit."

It started on August 18, when suspects from the banned Sipah-e-Mohammad Pakistan killed nine friends affiliated with the Deobandi school of thought in Gulberg and North Karachi within two hours. District West DIG Akram Bharoka believes that the Deobandis were targeted in North Karachi primarily because it was their home territory. The police suspect that the killings were an instant reaction to the bomb blast at the Imamia Student Organisation’s Youm-e-Quds rally which took place earlier that day." ....
"Law enforcers claim that the militants who went to prison for sectarian killings in the 1990s are free now and might have helped train a new set of killers." .... Detectives believe the small Shi‘ite Mehdi Force group, comprised of about 20 active members in Karachi, is behind several of the attacks on Deobandi clerics and their followers.
The underground network is led by a hardened militant codenamed “Shaheed”, or martyr, who recruits eager but unseasoned middle-class volunteers who compensate for their lack of numbers by stalking high-profile targets.
“They don’t have a background in terrorism, but after the Shia killings started they joined the group and they tried to settle the score,” said Superintendent of Police Raja Umar Khattab. “They kill clerics.”
In November [2012], suspected Mehdi Force gunmen opened fire at a tea shop near the Ahsan-ul-Uloom seminary, where Farooqi has a following, killing six students. A scholar from the madrasa was shot dead the next month, another student killed in January.  “It was definitely a reaction, Shias have never gone on the offensive on their own,” said Deputy Inspector-General Shahid Hayat.  According to the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee, a Karachi residents’ group, some 68 members of Farooqi’s Ahle Sunnat wal Jama‘at and 85 Shi‘ites were killed in the city from early September [2012] to February 19 [2013].

26 Jan 2014: "The Crime Investigation Department, claiming to have unravelled the network of a banned outfit operating in the city, released the pictures and sketches of 11 members of the group on Saturday at a press conference. The 11 members include ringleader Syed Wasim Ahsan Naqvi aka Shahid aka Kashif, Nisar Hussain aka Rehmat, Abbas aka Gora, Gul aka Abdullah, Sajid, Kashif aka Arif, Imran aka Mota aka Kalo, Adnan aka Manjan, Muhammad Ali Rizvi aka Doctor and two unidentified men. The gang reportedly has 17 members in total. Officials were able to gather the details with information from two of its members – Jauhar Hussain aka Jafer aka Rehman and Irshad Hussain aka Amir aka Hussain. Their arrests were disclosed during the press conference held by in-charge of the CID’s Counter Terrorism and Financial Crime Unit (CTFCU). One motorcycle, a Kalashnikov, three pistols, two cars and a CD with the list of their would-be targets were also found from their possession, claimed the officials. The arrests were made after an encounter when a police team conducted a raid in Abbas Town. CTFCU in-charge Raja Omar Khattab informed the media that the arrested suspects are affiliated with the banned outfit, Sipah-e-Muhammad Pakistan, and Syed Waseem Ahsan Naqvi aka Shahid is their ring-leader in Karachi. “This group has been involved in around 60 cases of sectarian killings in Karachi alone,” said Khattab. “A neighbouring country is providing funds and militancy training to this group.” The arrested suspects reportedly revealed that their ring leader paid each of them Rs25,000 per month to target people and even provided them with a residential flat and motorcycles. “These members knew each other only by face but they did not know each other even by names,” explained Khattab. Besides individual acts of targeted killings, the arrested persons also revealed to have targeted the central leader of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, Maulana Aurangzaib Farooqui in Gulshan-e-Iqbal in December 2012 in which the leader was injured while six of his guards, including four policemen, were killed. “Few of their members were also arrested in the past but were later released from the jails,” said the official, adding that the police was looking for the mastermind and more group members."

5 Mar 2014: Karachi: "Law enforcement agencies claimed that the two target killers, gunned down in an encounter with the police in Nazimabad on Monday, were ‘hit men’ affiliated with the banned Sipah-e-Muhammad Pakistan, The Express Tribune has learnt. The two target killers were gunned down by the police, minutes after they had murdered a shopkeeper at Nazimabad’s Old Urdu Bazaar and injured a member of the Dawat-e-Islami, Maulana Zafar Aslam, near Baqai Hospital, in consecutive targeted attacks. Both criminals were killed after an exchange of fire with the New Karachi SHO Chaudhry Afzal who was passing through the area. Their bodies were later shifted to the Edhi morgue, Sohrab Goth, for identification where police, through their informers, identified them as Mohammad Ali alias Samar Abbas, a resident of Hassan Colony in Gulbahar, and Bakir Ali, son of Akhtar Ali, a resident of Jafer Tayar Society in Malir.
An FIR on the charges of murder, attempt to murder and police encounter was registered against them at Nazimabad police station. Police officials believe that the two criminals were also involved in various other crimes, especially in the recent cases of targeted killings. Despite the fact that they had been identified, their bodies are still kept at the Edhi morgue as the police would not allow their families to take their bodies for burial.
Nazimabad SHO Ejaz Lodhi said that the deceased were members of the banned sectarian outfit, Sipah-e-Muhammad Pakistan, and were involved in more than 300 cases of target killings. “Samar Abbas was the ring leader of the target killers’ chain. He alone was involved in more than 300 target killings,” said SHO Lodhi, while speaking to The Express Tribune.
“In the past, Samar Abbas’ team members, Qalbe Abbas and Farhat Abbas, were also arrested. During the course of interrogation, they had also revealed that Samar Abbas was their ring leader and was involved in hundreds of targeted killings.” Farhat and Qalbe had even boasted that no one could apprehend their leader as he was a sharp shooter himself."

Those arrested were identified as Mohammad Ali alias Amir alias Sattar alias Siddiq, Syed Sheraz Ali Rizvi alais Hussain, Syed Hamid Abbas Naqvi alias Rajab Ali, Syed Israr Ali alias Nisar Ahmed alias Rehman alias Chacha, Pervez Hussain alias Ramzan and Mohammad Mumtaz Bhutto alias Nasir.
Five hand grenades, a 9mm pistol and five 30-bore pistols were found on the suspects, Abbasi said.
He said the terrorists belonged to a banned outfit and were tasked with targeting leaders, workers and supporters of a religious party.
All the suspects were said to be trained to closely follow their targets, had grown long beards to be able to mix with them and used to attend religious congregations and visit Siddiq-e-Akbar Masjid in North Karachi for Friday prayers.
During their stay in the religious circle, the suspects allegedly identified several leaders, workers and sympathisers of the religious party as their targets. Moreover, on the orders of their leaders, the terrorists used to attend religious programmes in mosques and processions. They also used to chase diehard workers of the rival party and after noticing their movement they sent the details to their organisation.
A joint interrogation team formed to keep an eye on the suspects marked them as “black” in a report.
Abbasi said that in order to attend religious programmes of the rival party, the suspects also hid their identities by obtaining fake CNICs.
Moreover, the six men had prepared a list of about 200 people as targets and they were funded by foreign actors for waging a proxy war in Pakistan, particularly in Karachi.
Abbasi said that in the year 2012 the terrorists along with their other associates attacked the convoy of Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqi in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, in which four policemen and two citizens were killed. In the attack, Maulana Farooqi, ASI Ashfaq Cheema and Abdul Rehman were injured. In the year 2015, the suspects along with their associates targeted DR Fayyaz Khan in the SITE-B area.

Suspects admit to murdering several doctors and religious scholars
Karachi
The anti-terrorism police have claimed busting a group of hitmen and capturing five suspects who had been carrying out sectarian killings in the city for the past several years.
The arrests were made during raids conducted in a District East neighbourhood by personnel of Sindh’s Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), said DIG Arif Haneef of the anti-terror force.
The target killers were identified as Syed Amir Hussain Rizvi alias Babar alias Irfan, Zainul Abideen alias Sunny, Faizyaab Ali alias Isphan alias Sheraz, Syed Mohsin Hussain alias Talha alias Pagal and Syed Mohammad Abbas alias Ashir alias Hamza.
The police found lethal weapons, including 9mm pistols, on the suspects, who were taken to the CTD headquarters for questioning.
DIG Haneef said the seized weapons and bullets were sent to the Sindh Police’s Forensic Division, which confirmed that the same guns had been used in several sectarian killings in Karachi.
The police took the action soon after it transpired during investigations in cases of sectarian killings and other acts of terrorism that the terrorists, who usually operated in District East and Malir areas, had expanded their network.
DIG Haneef said the arrests were made in the murder case of a known religious scholar, who was targeted in Gulistan-e-Jauhar a few weeks ago.
He said the terrorists used to target doctors, religious scholars and known personalities belonging to a rival sect after monitoring their victims’ movements.
He said the five men had been planning to kill some religious scholars before Eidul Azha to create sectarian tensions in the city, but their plan was timely foiled by the CTD officials.
The accused admitted to murdering Hafiz Mohammad Sajid in Shah Faisal Colony, Habibur Rehman in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Dr Fazalur Rehman in Landhi and Mufti Ghulam Akbar and Mufti Kamran Hussain in Gulshan-e-Iqbal this year.
DIG Haneef said the terrorists had been active in the city since 2014, and last year they targeted Iftekhar Ahmed in Jamshed Quarters, Naseem Khan and Asif in the airport police remit, besides attacking Maulana Yasir and injuring Ahmed in Gulistan-e-Jauhar.
In 2013-14, the suspects had gunned down Qari Ghulam Sarwar in Samanabad, Essa in Boat Basin, Mohammad Imran in New Karachi and Mohammad Tanveer and Mohammad Tauseef in Khokharapar.
The DIG said interrogators grilling the suspects to extract information about those who were working with them as facilitators.
