Sufism in Iran

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRvyFxGku9c
Grand Ayatollah Fayyad:

Sufism has entered the world of Shia Islam under the name of 'Irfan' (mysticism). There is not an act of worship in Islam or a pathway that is called 'Sufism'. The pure Imams (a.s) of the Ahlulbayt have condemned the Sufis in numerous Hadeeth, due to their deviancy. The true concept of 'Zuhud' (Renouncing worldly pleasures in order to gain nearness to Allah zwj), is according to the teachings of the Ahlulbayt (a.s). This wide spread phenomena of Sufism has began spreading into our Islamic seminaries, The scholars have now had need to address this issue. Among the famous icons of Sufism such are al-Halaj, Ibn Arabi and Jalal al-Din Rumi. Likewise they are those who claim to be Shias but are in fact Sufis at heart.

Persecution of Sufis in Iran

http://www.rferl.org/content/article/1065846.html
16 Feb 2006: "The Iranian government had been showing signs of increasing antipathy towards Iran's Sufi community, but experts say the scale and violence of the clashes on 13 November is unheard of. The deputy governor of Qom, Ahmad Hajizadeh, said 1,200 worshippers -- also known as dervishes -- were arrested as police sought to close a Sufi house of worship. ......
Several anti-Sufi books have been published in Iran over the past year and several clerics have also harshly condemned Sufism, Azamayesh says, noting that the recent clashes in Qom erupted after a speech by a cleric, who blasted Sufism and called for restrictions on the Sufi community.

Iran's hard-line daily "Kayhan" on 14 February quoted senior clerics in Qom as saying that Sufism should be eradicated in the city, while the Reuters news agency reported that in September one of Iran's hard-line clerics, Grand Ayatollah Hussein Nuri-Hamedani, called for a clampdown on Sufis in Qom."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/4907406.stm
25 Apr 2006: "Some Sufis say before Iran's Islamic Revolution, Mohammad Reza Shah imprisoned some Sufi leaders. They say in the early years after the revolution, the new regime also confronted some Sufi groups - detaining some leaders and shutting down their gatherings.
Sufis look to their own spiritual leaders, while Iran's official version of Islam advocates the practice of following a Marja-e taqlid, or a cleric who is an expert in Islamic jurisprudence.
And in contrast to Sufis, orthodox Muslims believe that a person can never "become" God or be united with him."
.....

a government official who preferred to remain unidentified says the regime's treatment of Sufis is not always consistent because it is based on ambiguous laws.
He explains that on the one hand, Sufi meetings should not be disrupted, but on the other hand, Sufis should not proselytize.
"We asked both the previous and the current governments to have more concrete laws and to form a commission to oversee Sufis' activities because regulations about their activities are contradictory," says the official, who worked for both the previous, reformist President Mohammad Khatami and the current, conservative President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

12 Oct 2006: Mostafa Azmayesh, a Paris-based expert on Sufism and a representative of the Nematollahi Gonabadi order, says defamatory articles and religious decrees, or fatwas, targeting Sufism have appeared in Iran's conservative press in recent months.

One of the latest fatwas was issued by Ayatollah Fazel Lankarani in the "Joumhouri Eslami" newspaper. Lankarani accused Sufis of misleading Iranian youth.

"It was said in the articles that any contact with Sufis -- particularly with the Gonabadi branch -- is not permitted," Azmayesh says. "Even participating in their Koran readings is 'haram' (forbidden to Muslims). The aim is to create pressure and discrimination against the followers of this order. There was fear that during the month of Ramadan [authorities] would take such actions, but no one imagined that they would go that far and show such disrespect to Dr. Tabandeh Majzub Ali Shah, who is a national figure, a well-respected judge, and a university professor."

Followers of the Gonabadi orders have told RFE/RL that several Sufis have been fired from their jobs recently. They also claimed that others have been discriminated against by state agencies because of their faith. Sufis say restrictions on their literature have increased and worship gatherings have been broken up.

23 Dec 2006: Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad launched a plan to suppress what he called "indecent religious associations that work under the cover of spirituality and Sufism".[131] Morteza Agha-Tehrani, one of the closest disciples of Mesbah-Yazdi and moral advisor to President Ahmadinejad was the leader of a raid on Sufi mosques in Qom.

12 Nov 2007: "Around 180 Sufi Muslims have been arrested in Iran after attacking a Shia mosque where a cleric labelled their religion "illegitimate", say reports.
The confrontation in the western city of Boroujerd led to a shootout between the Sufis and police that reportedly left about 80 people injured. Sufis are tolerated in the Islamic Republic though some religious leaders have branded them "a danger to Islam". About 1,000 Sufis were held last year in clashes at Iran's holy city of Qom."

http://www.rferl.org/content/article/1079140.html
16 Nov 2007: "In fact, just a week before the violence in Borujerd, Iranian Deputy Culture Minister Mohsen Parviz issued a statement saying there is no place for the promotion of Sufism in Shi'a-dominated Iran. Parviz's remarks followed complaints from Shi'a clerics about state television coverage of the Rumi International Congress, an event in Iran commemorating the 800th anniversary of the birth of the Persian poet and mystic Rumi. Parviz, who also served as executive director of the committee for the Rumi Congress, said the clerics' complaints focused on news broadcasts about performances of Sama, the Sufi practice of gathering to listen to religious poetry that is sung and often accompanied by ecstatic dance or other rituals.
...... in late 2005, a shari'a scholar in the holy city Qom, Ayatollah Hossein Nouri-Hamedani, called for a crackdown on Sufi groups after labeling them a "danger to Islam." Since then, articles attacking Sufis have proliferated in Iranian national newspapers.  In February 2006, police closed a building in Qom that was being used as a house of worship by Sufis from the Nematollahi Gonabadi order. When Sufis responded by staging a protest in Qom, clashes broke out and Iranian authorities arrested more than 1,000 people."

18 Feb 2009:  A house of worship of the Gonabadi dervishes in Isfahan has reportedly been destroyed by the Iranian authorities.
20 Feb 2009: "Sufi dervishes say several of their colleagues have been injured and about 30 of them arrested after a confrontation with police in the central Iranian city of Isfahan. Iranian security forces attacked the dervishes, who had gathered next to the tomb of dervish poet Naser Ali where their house of worship was located. The incident came one day after local authorities demolished the house of worship of the Gonabadi dervishes in Isfahan."

http://www.rferl.org/content/Sufism_Under_Attack_In_Iran/1499990.html
26 Feb 2009:"Some conservative clerics have called the Sufis a danger to Islam. Ayatollah Hossein Nuri Hamedani, a high-ranking cleric in Qom, said in 2006 that by not interfering in politics, Sufis weaken Islam. Hard-liners have also accused the dervishes of being used by foreign powers to create discord in Iranian society.

In 2007, a letter was published by a group describing themselves as seminarians of Qom in which they warned against the "dangers" of Sufism and called on authorities to deal with it "more firmly." They added that the "Hizbullah nation of Iran" is ready to cooperate and assist officials.

According to Azmayesh, who is the representative of the Gonabadi dervishes outside Iran, the demonization campaign against the Sufis began with the publication of several books in 2005. He says the books argued that Sufis should be treated as second-class citizens because they don't believe in the principle of "velayat-e faqih" (the Iranian regime's principle that the supreme Shiite jurist should be the nation's political leader) and they follow their own spiritual leaders.

"[Sufis] shouldn't be allowed to have government jobs. If they do have government jobs, then they should be identified and fired; this is what is written in the books," Azmayesh says. "These books started being written and published [a few months] before Mahmud Ahmadinejad came to power. After he became president, the contents of these books were gradually implemented."
.......
Jalal Jalalizadeh, a former Kurdish legislator, says some of the sheikhs of the dervishes in Iran's Kurdistan have ties to the establishment.

"The government supports them and uses them against intellectual religious movements," Jalalizadeh says. "Sometimes it even incites them against those who interpret religious issues in a new way in Kurdistan -- they call them Wahhabis and the dervishes stand against them."

Azmayesh says the government believes dervishes can prevent extremism in the eastern areas.

"According to a decision by Iran's National Security Council, [officials] don't act against the dervish orders in the Sunni-populated parts of the country because they say the dervishes prevent Al-Qaeda from growing in these areas," Azmayesh says.

A Sanandaj-based activist who did not want to be named tells RFE/RL that the government does not interfere in the affairs of the Qaderi dervishes in the Kurdish areas for fear of unrest in a region already under heavy social and political restrictions.

Different dervish orders use different rituals to cleanse their mind and open their heart to God.

The Qhaderi dervishes use chants and rhythmic dance to get into a state of trance.

The ceremonies of the Gonabadi dervishes in Iran include prayers and poetry reading by some of Iran's great Sufi poets, such as Rumi and Hafez.

Yadollahi, who with his fellow dervishes performs the rituals three times a week, says Sufis are determined to continue their path despite the increased pressure."

13 May 2010: "Iranian militiamen have raided a Sufi house of worship in the northern city of Karaj, a Sufi community leader told RFE/RL's Radio Farda.  Mostafa Azmayesh is a representative of the Sufi Nematollahi Gonabadi order, which suffered the attack. Azmayesh told Radio Farda on May 12 that roughly 100 members of the Basij security force accompanied by plainclothes agents on motorcycles attacked the house of worship on May 10 in this city west of Tehran.  The attackers were prevented from entering the building and were later dispersed by police.  Iran's Basij is a semi-regular volunteer militia. The attackers shouted slogans against Sufism, a branch of Islam regarded as heresy by some conservative Muslim clerics."

7 Sep 2011: "A dervish has died in southwestern Iran amid an ongoing government crackdown against the Sufi sect, Radio Farda reports.  Three dervishes from the Gonabadi Nematollahi order -- Ebrahim Fazil, Ali Karimi, and Mohammad Ali Saadi -- were shot by security forces on September 5 in Kavar, Fars Province.  It is not known which of the men was killed. The other two are in serious condition in the hospital.  The Sufis reportedly came under attack from "plainclothes agents" and members of the Basij militia. Opposition websites have reported that those who assaulted the dervishes were armed and used tear gas.  Davood Montazeri, a lawyer for and member of the Gonabadi dervishes, said the Kavar incident took place after an Islamic cleric in the province, whom he identified as "Shahbazi," called last week on citizens to demonstrate against dervishes.  Radio Farda reports that late last week Sufi shops were also reportedly set on fire and the homes of Sufis attacked by a group of hard-liners chanting "death to American dervishes."  Sources close to the dervishes told Radio Farda that scores of dervishes were detained and dozens sustained injuries.  In recent years, Iranian authorities have demolished several houses of worship of dervishes in Qom, Isfahan, and other cities.  Dervishes believe their growing popularity is one of the main reasons for the increased pressure. The Nematollahi order is Iran's largest Sufi order, with reportedly more than 2 million members across the country, including in major cities such as Tehran and Isfahan."

http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/en/originals/2013/12/sufi-practices-questioned-by-iranian-clerics.html
1 Dec 2013: "One of the most serious clashes with the Sufis in Iran happened in 2006, in the city of Qom, when the religious center (Hussainia) belonging to the Ne'matollahi-Gonabadi order, one of the popular Sufi orders, was destroyed. The jurists in Qom created a negative atmosphere against the Sufis, distributing notices claiming that the Sufis are apostates, until finally the clerics were questioned regarding this issue. Afterward, there were attempts at deporting the Sufis from Qom and confiscating their religious center. Following these events, numerous members of the Ne'matollahi order traveled from all over Iran to Qom and held a few days of sit-in protests in the Shariat religious center and the streets surrounding it. Holding out flowers as well as the images of Dervishes martyred during the Iran-Iraq war and performing religious rituals, members of the order were trying to demonstrate their respect for peace, their commitment to religion and their loyalty to the Iranian revolution."......
The attractive characteristics of mysticism and spiritual movements, including their laxness regarding the religious rules, have always captured ordinary people’s attention. This interest in mysticism diminishes the power and influence of clerics in society. This fact, in addition to claims regarding the immoral and heretical lifestyle of the Sufis, is an important reason behind the clerical opposition to Sufism. This opposition goes so far that even Rumi, the Iranian Sufi poet of the 13th century, was being dismissed and there were strong criticisms about the festival conducted in his honor."

https://en.qantara.de/content/turning-away-from-shia-in-iran-a-tsunami-of-atheism
2013: According to that theoretical basis, on the one hand religious minorities have to be tolerated, while at the same time anything which is religiously "offensive" has to be fought back firmly, since it's not just a matter of religious conviction, but a threat to national security. And every time some foreign organisation or government protests against the persecution of religious minorities in Iran, Mohammed-Javad Larijani, the chairman of the Iranian Human Rights Commission, repeats, "Nobody is persecuted in Iran because of his beliefs."
New age sects popular
But the claim is heard more frequently these days, following the arrest of eleven housewives in Shahrud in north-eastern Iran for their membership of the Interuniversal Mysticism sect.
The women held a weekly six-hour learning session which their teacher, a lawyer from Isfahan, who travelled 700 kilometres just to attend. The Fars news agency reported on 20th December 2012 that they were involved not only with "obscure mysticism", but also with a damaging psychotherapy, the so-called "meta-therapy".
For some, Interuniversal Mysticism is an attempt to become one with the world and to find one's inner peace. For the religious and moral guardians of the state it's a false mysticism, a subversive and dangerous tendency which manipulates the young and undermines Islam.
The sect offers a mixture of a search for meaning and a system of psychotherapy. As well as offering an explanation of the world, it also offers a therapeutic method called "Faradarmani" or "meta-therapy".
The sect began to grow five years ago among students and the urban middle-class, but quickly began to spread throughout the country, as the cases from Shahrud show. Its members believe that the world has consciousness and radiates energy. According to the sect's founder, Mohammed Ali Taheri, who has been sentenced to seven years in prison and 70 lashes, the task of the faithful is to turn aside the negative energy in the world.
The sect's members focus on the unity of being, as do Rumi and other great masters of Iranian mysticism: everything is just a form of God's presence. When the sect started up, it received the support of the authorities, since it referred back to Islam and Iran's traditional mysticism.
Believers were able to publish books about their faith; seminars were held at universities. The sect's teachings were publicised abroad, in Armenia, Turkey or South Korea. Taheri travelled abroad and boasted of his two foreign honorary doctorates. Even state television praised his commitment.
But since Ahmadinejad was voted back into power three and a half years ago, the focus has been on the "wide-ranging struggle" against "any form of false mysticism", which is being led by the highest level of the country's political and religious authorities. The Seminary for the Purification of the Faith at the theological university of Homs puts the number of people in the Interuniversal Mysticism sect at around 300,000.
On the websites which are leading the fight against the sect, that figure is said to be too low. The sect is no longer just a harmless mystical circle but a dangerous movement, almost a small mass movement, which calls the principles of the Islamic Republic into question.
No more pussy-footing
The official campaign against "false mysticism" was started more than two years ago personally by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. He spent a week in the holy city of Ghom in October 2010, where he met with a number of Grand Ayatollahs.
On the last day of his visit, he gave a keynote address to theology students in which he said, "The prevalence of licentiousness, the propagation of false mysticism, and the so-called house churches are attempts undertaken by the Zionists and other enemies to fight against Islam."
As soon as he left the city, which is seen as the main centre of Shiite scholarship, one Ayatollah after another issued a fatwa against "false mysticism", declaring that the propagation of its teachings meant apostasy and sacrilege.

24 Sep 2014: Hundreds of Iranian Sufis protested in front of Tehran’s public prosecutors’ office this weekend, demanding to be jailed alongside their friends in prison, who they say are being treated terribly. Security forces violently cracked down on the protesters, arresting dozens. Over the past decade, Iran’s Sufis have become increasingly marginalized, with the authorities closing down many of their places of worship. Since 2009, when their leaders supported opposition candidate Medhi Karoubi, the pressure has mounted even further. Dozens of their most famous representatives have been arrested on charges of belonging to a cult. And in the past few months, Sufis have reported that these detainees were being treated increasingly poorly in prison, leading to this weekend’s protests.

30 Jul 2015:   Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi: Sufism and Gnostic movements are growing fast. Without nationwide crackdown on them, Islam could be in danger,.

http://www.rferl.org/content/iran-faith-healer-who-scared-the-regime/27189544.html
August 14, 2015: Spiritual leader Mohammad Ali Taheri attracted a significant following in Iran by spreading the word of mystical love and the idea that he could help cure the sick by connecting them to divine powers.
"I haven't used any medicine in five months and I've fully recovered," a proclaimed former multiple-sclerosis sufferer exclaims in one YouTube video, one of many posted on social media that are keeping Taheri's teachings and treatments alive.
But his work has earned him a death sentence in the Islamic republic -- a punishment Tehran normally reserves for drug dealers and those who take up arms against the regime -- and sparked calls for leniency and allegations of a cover-up.
.....
Taheri was first arrested in 2010, on security charges, and was released after spending more than two months in jail.
He was rearrested in 2011, reportedly held in solitary confinement, and convicted of a host of charges, including acting against Iran's national security, insulting sanctities , and touching the wrists of unrelated female patients.
Meanwhile, a smear campaign was in full swing, with hard-line conservative websites and blogs referring to his group as a "deviant sect" and claiming that he had amassed an "illicit" fortune through his teachings.
After three court sessions in October 2011, he was handed a five-year prison sentence, and has since been held in a section of Tehran's notoriously harsh Evin prison controlled by the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
Then, in early 2015, more criminal proceedings were launched against him.
Taheri's group and work were again scrutinized, with hard-line media reporting that three senior Qom-based clerics had declared Taheri an apostate after reviewing his writings and audiovisual materials.
In July, it was confirmed that he had been found guilty of "spreading corruption on Earth," a criminal charge often used in the early years of the Islamic republic against opponents of the regime.
...
Taheri's death sentence, according to Ali Asghar Ramezanpour, who served as deputy culture minister under former reformist President Mohammad Khatami, can be viewed as a warning to others.
"After Ali Khamenei warned against false mysticism, meaning spiritual viewpoints that are different from Iran's state line, the IRGC's intelligence branch took steps to demonstrate that it was moving against such groups," Ramezanpour tells RFE/RL.

Oct 14, 2015:  Intelligence and security services continued their harassment and intimidation of prominent Sufi leaders and their raids on Sufi businesses. Government restrictions on Sufi groups and husseiniya (houses of worship) continued. On February 20, security forces raided a Sufi printing business in Ahvaz and arrested two employees and confiscated printed materials, according to Sufi news website Majzooban Noor. On March 10, jailed members of the Gonabadi Sufi order conducted a hunger strike to protest their being denied proper health care, according to media reports.
.....
According to a June 5 report by Majzooban Noor, a special clerical court sentenced Abbas Salehian, a Sufi, to six months’ imprisonment for “committing a forbidden act by promoting the Gonabadi Sufi order faith.” The report noted that Salehian was not a clergy member. On July 11, Majzooban Noor reported that a special clerical court removed Shia Muslim cleric Mohammad Nouri from his religious duties for “joining the Sufis while in clerical costume.” Nouri said agents of the Ministry of Intelligence and Security had interrogated and repeatedly threatened him.
....
There were reports of Shia clerics and prayer leaders denouncing Sufism and the activities of Sufis in both sermons and public statements. According to a December 22 report by Majzooban Noor, a Shia group in Karaj sponsored a series of speeches against Sufism and put up related posters in front of the city’s Sufi congregation hall. According to the report, authorities intervened and removed the posters in an effort to reduce tensions.

http://www.journalismisnotacrime.com/en/wall/rezaentesari/
2016: Reza Entesari was given an eight-year sentence for his work as a journalist and Sufi rights activist. Throughout his detention, he has suffered repeated beatings and was sent to the notorious Rajaie Shahr Prison for protesting against his conditions. It was reported he was recently hospitalized for a heart attack but authorities have apparently ignored his family’s requests for information on his whereabouts.
Reza Entesari was arrested on September 4, 2011 while photographing a gathering of Gonabadi Dervishes, a Sufi order that believes in non-violence and follows a mystic interpretation of Islam. The gathering aimed to publicize the plight of dervishes living in the province of Fars. The Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly persecuted Sufis, and this intensified during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, especially following the 2009 presidential election.
Prior to 2009, Entesari worked for the IRIB, but he was subsequently fired. Upon his arrest, he was initially put in solitary confinement at Evin Prison but soon had to be taken to hospital because prison guards repeatedly beat him, breaking his hand and several ribs. After he underwent surgery, he was immediately taken back to his cell against the doctor’s orders, leaving him with a permanently disfigured finger. Entesari endured further mistreatment while in prison, and on October 22 2012, he refused to attend a trial as a sign of protest against the illegality of his prosecution. The presiding judge used this refusal as an excuse to stop his medical treatment.
After nearly two years in detention, the same “hanging judge” sentenced him to another eight years in prison.  During his sentence, Entesari went on a hunger strike with four other Gonabadi dervishes; he was punished for this by being transferred to the notorious Rajaie Shahr Prison in Karaj. He was eventually returned to Evin Prison, but he was isolated from other journalists and prisoners of conscience and incarcerated with criminals accused of non-political crimes. According to Iranian law, political prisoners and prisoners of conscience are exempt from having to wear prison clothing or shackles during visits. Despite this, prison authorities often force prisoners to wear a uniform, handcuffs and foot shackles during family visits.  In recent months, Entesari has refused to see his family as a protest against this practice. It was recently reported that Entesari suffered a heart attack while in prison and has been hospitalized. The prosecutor’s office have refused to provide his family with any information about what hospital he is being treated at, or about his whereabouts in general.

22 Oct 2016:
After three weeks on hunger strike, imprisoned spiritual thinker Mohammad Ali Taheri went into a coma and underwent emergency medical treatment on October 18, 2016, but the authorities are not revealing his location, his sister told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran.
“Attorney Mahmoud Alizadeh Tabatabaee told my brother’s wife on Wednesday (October 19) that [Mohammad Ali Taheri] had slipped into a coma on Tuesday and was transferred out of Evin Prison to Baghiatollah Hospital, but his relatives were not able to locate him there, and the prison officials are not saying anything about where he is,” said Azardokht Taheri. “If anything happens to him, we will hold them responsible.”
Mohammad Ali Taheri, the head of the banned Erfan-e Halgheh spiritual group, was supposed to be freed in March 2016 after serving a five-year prison sentence for “insulting the sacred,” “immoral contact with women” and “carrying out illegal medical procedures,” and went on hunger strike on September 29 to demand his freedom. While in prison he was accused of “blasphemy” for books he had previously published, and sentenced to death for spreading “corruption on earth,” but the Supreme Court overturned the sentence in December 2015.
“Mr. Taheri was supposed to call his family on Tuesday, as he does every Tuesday, but he didn’t,” Azardokht Taheri told the Campaign. “Then, on Wednesday, he did not show up for visitation with his wife, and prison officials said that he was not allowed to meet anyone that day. But they didn’t explain why.”
In a post published on his Facebook page on October 19, Tabatabaee said he had no “reliable information” about his client’s condition, adding that there was no legal justification for Taheri’s continued incarceration.
Mohammad Ali Taheri had already been severely weakened by another hunger strike in 2015, which he endured for more than two months despite pleas by his concerned relatives to break it.
“After Mohammad’s 58th day on hunger strike, his relatives visited him on October 7, 2015, in Evin Prison,” said Azardokht Taheri in an interview with the Campaign in October 2015. “They said he has become extremely thin and did not look well at all. They said he has become like a skeleton.”
Iran’s security establishment continues to persecute Taheri and supporters of the Erfan-e Halgheh spiritual group, viewing it and any other alternative belief system, especially those seeking converts, as a threat to the prevailing Shia order.

23 May 2017:
Mostafa Daneshjou, a formerly imprisoned lawyer and member of a Sufi religious order known as the Gonabadi Dervishes, has been expelled from university without explanation, the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) has learned.
“I think the reason why they expelled me was my belief in the Gonabadi order,” Daneshjou told CHRI. “I have always defended the dervishes and I spent almost four years in prison for it.”
“I think that’s why the Intelligence Ministry is taking away my rights,” he added. “Usually these expulsion orders are issued by the Intelligence Ministry’s document verification office and they decide who can and can’t study at the university.”
Daneshjou was finishing his second term in criminology at the Islamic Azad University of Tehran as a graduate student when he received the news in a phone call from the university’s administrative office on May 20, 2017.
“They told me that according to an order from the university’s central security office, I have been banned from continuing my education, but they did not say why they reached that decision,” Daneshjou told CHRI.
“The next day I filed a complaint and demanded a written explanation,” he added. “I will wait and see. If I don’t hear back from them, I will take my case to the appropriate judicial authorities.”
Daneshjou started working as a lawyer in 2003, but was banned from practicing law in 2007 because of his peaceful advocacy in defense of the rights of Gonabadi Dervishes, which follow a different interpretation of Islam than Iran’s ruling Shia establishment.
Iran’s security establishment views other Muslim sects, religions and any other alternative belief system, especially those seeking converts, as a threat to the prevailing Shia order.
In September 2012, Daneshjou and six other Gonabadi lawyers—Hamidreza Moradi, Amir Eslami, Reza Entesari, Afshin Karampour, Farshid Yadollahi and Omid Behrouzi—were sentenced to prison terms ranging from four to seven years each for the charges of “spreading falsehoods,” “propaganda against the state” and “assembly and collusion against national security” for their alleged administration of the Majzooban-e Noor website, which provided news about the Dervishes.
The prisoners were all granted early conditional release in 2015.

Exiled Members of Sufi Gonabadi Dervish Order Told to “Repent” or Serve Life in Prison

The six men were arrested in Kowar, Fars Province, in August 2011 when radical Shia Muslim seminary students attacked their religious gathering. They were interrogated at the Intelligence Ministry’s detention center in the province’s capital city of Shiraz and later transferred to the city’s Adelabad Prison.
Convicted in April 2015 by the Revolutionary Court in Shiraz of the charges of “waging war against the state” for following “a deviant sect,” the six were sentenced to long periods in exile in different cities. Shamshirzan, Dehghan and Arayesh were respectively handed life in exile sentencea in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas; Zahedan in Sistan and Baluchistan Province and Ahwaz in Khuzestan Province.

The judge responsible for handing down the Shiraz Revolutionary Court verdicts argued that the sentences were changed because the punishment of exile was merely the “minimum” allowed under the law, but that the alleged crime of “waging war against the state” by following “a deviant sect” has no “ceiling” — meaning that it can be arbitrarily increased — unless they repent. Article 284 of the Islamic Republic Penal Code states that “warriors against God” must stay in exile until they repent, but in recent years Ayatollah Khamenei has issued fatwas allowing the judiciary to convert the exile verdict into prison sentences.

5 Jan 2018:
Four members of the Sufi Gonabadi Dervish order, including three university students, have been held in solitary confinement in Evin Prison’s Ward 209 without charge since December 30, 2017.

“The IRGC agents went to the hospital intent on arresting Sharifi Moghaddam,” the source, who requested anonymity for security reasons, told the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI). “When he asked to see a warrant, the agents suddenly decided to arrest the four others as well. The dervishes resisted and the agents called for backup forces, which used tasers to apprehend them.
Continued the source: “One of the agents even fired a shot into the ceiling of the hospital lobby. When a medical staff member complained, the agent shouted back with obscenities and then the detainees were violently put into a vehicle and taken away.”
“They also confiscated the hospital security cameras and hard disks without a court order,” added the source.
The Gonabadi Order’s interpretation of Islam differs from that of Iran’s ruling Muslim Shia establishment. The Islamic Republic views any alternative belief system, especially those seeking converts, as a threat to the prevailing Shia establishment and continues to imprison Gonabadi Dervishes as part of an ongoing persecution campaign.
Kasra Nouri, Mohammad Sharifi Moghaddam, Faezeh Abdipour, Mohammad Reza Darvish and Zafarali Moghimi were arrested while they were visiting fellow dervish Hamidreza Moradi at Day General Hospitalon December 30, 2017, a source close to the order told CHRI.
Moghimi was released the same evening. Nouri is a law student at Tehran University, Abdipour studies political science at Allameh Tabataba’i University and Mohammad Sharifi Moghaddam is an engineering student at the Sharif University of Technology.

23 Feb 2018:
After days of bloody clashes between dervishes and security services, a dervish leader has implored his followers to remain calm despite continued threats from authorities.
Followers of the Gonabadi order of dervishes are gathered outside the home of their leader, 90-year-old Nour Ali Tabandeh, in northern Tehran, where they have refused to move, despite confrontations with police.
“We could have hit the residence with a rocket-propelled grenade and leveled it to the ground, but we acted with intelligence and authority,” Tehran police chief and Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Hasan Rahimi told state-run TV. He went on to declare that his forces have cleaned up the street of “thugs” and “rioters.”
The threat by a police chief to use an anti-tank weapon against unarmed people followed a tough statement by President Hassan Rouhani that no one should mess with law enforcement personnel.

Two Shia Marjas compare Gonabadi Sufis to ISIS
While the Gonabadi Dervishes have encouraged their supporters, the Islamic Republic's authorities continue to attack the group and called the two Shiite imams of this group "false mysticism", "void and distorted," and compared them with ISIS.
According to Ayatollah Hussein Nouri Hamedani, Ayatollah Hussein Noori Hamedani, from Shiite Imam Ali, on Saturday, March 5, called Sufism a "pervert sect" and called for "retaliation" in connection with the conflict of Tehran's Pasdaran Street.

"Officials who say that they are wise and moderate are not right, they are void and devious, and they say lies," he added.
....
Nasser Makarem Shirazi, another Shiite imam, also said on Saturday that "false mysticism is one of the most dangerous religious, social and moral issues that a typical example of this was the painful event in Tehran."

He added: "The Da'ishis are the same Wahhabis who are in favor of false monotheism, who consider everyone as an unbeliever and consider their blood, the group is a supporter of false mysticism and are in some way similar in nature."

"We hope that when they want to talk about them, authorities are careful about their interpretations, and they will not say something contrary to the religious doctrines that will have a reversible result," the source said.

....

Ahmed Alam alhoda, Friday Imam of Mashhad, also called his dervishes "enemy spy" on Friday and considered the clashes between the group and the law enforcement "planned by the United States and Britain"

23 Feb 2018:
Speaking during his jurisprudence class at Qom’s Grand Mosque, Grand Ayatollah Hoseyn Nouri-Hamadani referred to the an attack in Tehran on February 19th, where five members of the police and Basij volunteer forces were killed in a series of attacks by members of the Gonabadi Dervish cult and offered his condolences on the martyrdoms of the victims and called on the officials to punish the perpetrators of this crime as soon as possible.
The revered Iranian source of emulation added, “In my jurisprudential discussions regarding Islamic denominations over the past year, I have said that Sufism is a deviant sect. There are more than seventy Sufi sects, each of which excommunicates and slanders the others. The common features of these sects are that based on the narrations of the enemies of the Ahlul-Bayt. In his works, ‘Hadiqat al-Shi’ah’ and ‘Sahib al-Wasail,’ the scholar Muhaqqiq al-Ardabili (d. 1585 CE) separately expressed the deviations of these sects.”
He said, “The enemies of Islam have created such sects against the Ahlul-Bayt. Sufism is an false sect which was created to deceive people with the appearance of honour.”
Ayatollah Nouri-Hamadani continued, “By displaying a certain visage, the sect has stolen the dignity and the words of the Ahlul-Bayt and used their names in order to deceive society. There is no doubt that this sect is deviated – from beginning of Islam, the enemies of the Ahlul-Bayt have created such sects to overshadow their activities.”   https://twitter.com/ICHRI/status/968551560014974979 https://www.iranhumanrights.org/2018/02/dozens-of-gonabadi-dervishes-hospitalized-in-tehran-as-friday-prayer-leaders-demand-harsh-retribution/ 23 Feb 2018:170 members of a persecuted Sufi order in Iran known as the Gonabadi Dervishes have been hospitalized after clashes with the police. But Friday prayer leaders are blaming everything on the dervishes....
“First of all, they [dervishes] created this distraction so that the authorities wouldn’t have a chance to take care of the people’s economic issues,” said ultra-conservative Ayatollah Ahmad Alamolhoda, the Friday prayer leader of Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city.
“On the other hand, they caused these riots to cover up the enemy’s espionage operations against our missile sites under the guise of environmental protection,” he added. “These [dervishes] must be uprooted for harming people’s security.”
The Friday prayer leader was building on the conspiracy theory recently aired in a state-funded TV program that accused Kavous Seyed-Emami, a prominent academic and environmentalist who died in state custody in Tehran, of engaging in espionage. Neither the program nor Alamolhoda provided evidence to support their claims.
In Qom Province, Friday Prayer Leader Mohammad Saeedi described the dervishes as “terrorists.”
“The recent seditious confrontations in Tehran were terrorist in nature. Some individuals calling themselves dervishes robbed the people of their peace and security with their Daesh-like antics,” declared Saeedi, referring to the ISIS terrorist group.
The ayatollah added, “The people expect the authorities to deal with these seditionists firmly and quickly. These recent riots in Tehran proved that seditionists don’t deserve Islamic mercy.”
In Tehran, Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahedi-Kermani said that the dervishes “who committed murder and destroyed people’s homes, shops and cars” must receive the stiffest punishments.
The prayer leaders blamed the dervishes for the violence but images posted on social media suggest that the clashes began after police fired bullets at dervishes who were demanding the release of one of their fellow devotees from a police station in Tehran on February 19.
23 Feb 2018:
This accelerated the government propaganda machinery’s virulent attacks against the Sufis. The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, which previously referred to the Sufis as “a deviant sect” is using the derogatory term “Darvish-e Daeshi” — “Islamic State Sufis.” Kayhan, a conservative newspaper in Tehran, calls them “Satanist” and various other authorities accuse the Sufis of criminal acts as diverse as “car theft” and “raping women” to “freemasonry” and “acting as the lackeys of foreign enemies.”

20 Mar 2018:
Mohammad Salas, a member of a Sufi order in Iran known as the Gonabadi Dervishes, has been sentenced to death for killing three policemen during clashes in Tehran between members of the minority faith and security forces in February 2018.
While Salas’ prosecution was swift, there has been no investigation into the death of Mohammad Raji, a Gonabadi dervish who died after being arrested during the clashes.
...
The Islamic Republic views any alternative belief system, especially those seeking converts, as a threat to the Shia majority population in Iran and has imprisoned dervishes and expelled them from universities as part of an ongoing persecution campaign.
Some 170 dervishes were hospitalized after police forces tried to shut down a demonstration in Tehran by members of the Sufi order on February 19 and 20.

30 Mar 2018:
Eight members of Iran's Gonabadi Sufi minority are on hunger strike, Amnesty International said Friday, protesting alleged torture in prison after protests in which security forces members were killed.
"One of the men, Abbas Dehghan, has allegedly been threatened with his wife being raped in front of him if he does not 'confess'," the rights group said in a statement.

11 May 2018:
The head of Tehran’s Justice Department, Gholamhossein Esma’eili has admitted that the trial of hundreds of Gonabadi dervishes is underway at public and Revolutionary Courts behind closed doors.
...
Judicial authorities also shut down the Haqiqat publishing house and the Reza Charity institution, both of which belong to Gonabadi dervish members.
Most of the trials, according to human rights activists, are held behind closed doors, while the accused are deprived of access to lawyers.
According to Amnesty International (AI), at least 11 women from Iran’s Gonabadi dervish religious minority have been arbitrarily detained in inhumane conditions without access to lawyers since February 20, following the violent dispersal of a protest held by the Gonabadi dervishes in Tehran.

26 May 2018:
Reports say at least 10 women from Iran’s Gonabadi Dervish community are serving their sentences at Shahr-e Rey prison based on arbitrary trials. The AI says they have not had access to their lawyers, since February 2018.
They were arrested for their peaceful participation in a protest in Tehran by members of the persecuted minority, which turned violent when security forces used water cannons, firearms, and tear gas to disperse the crowds.
The AI says these women have been suffering various illnesses and problems such as head injuries, broken arms, and vaginal bleeding a result of their ill-treatment by security forces and that they also have been denied adequate treatment for pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
The AI characterized the women’s interrogation process at the prison as “hostile,” adding that they have been insulted during questioning and by prison doctors “for their beliefs.”
The AI’s statement has also maintained, “There are concerns that doctors have also sought to degrade the women by exploiting cultural taboos around sexuality, asking the women intrusive questions about their sexual relations, such as whether they have 'boyfriends' or are 'sleeping around.'"
“A lack of stretchers and wheelchairs has resulted in fellow detainees being forced to carry sick prisoners out of their rooms and into the clinic, which has led to falls and other accidents,” AI has cited detainees as saying.

22 Sep 2018:
Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani, during the meeting with the professors and practitioners of the "Sufism and Indicators and Critics" conference, which was held by the Islamic Propaganda Office of the Qom Seminary, stated: Sufism is a deviant sect, and Ayatollah Tabatabai in the commentary of al-Mizan in Volume Fifth, the diverse denominations that are in Islam are mentioned, and there they refer to the Sufis in which direction they deviance in Islam and use the Quranic verses.

 * Sale of the characteristics of the Imams (AS) for the Sufi elders

This Shi'i Imam of the Qur'an said: "All the qualities we imply for our Imams that the Imams (AS) have in their lives, and they dominated the non-living beings and plants and animals. These have been expressed by the Sufis in the faces that they have made, and the qualities that are unique in Ahl al-Bayt, they attributed them to their elders.

Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani added: "I needed the servant to go to their words, and in a book such as Tezkerat al-Awlia, which is a Sufi authentic book, they narrate the words of the Sufis that have stolen from our traditions and stamped it, and fixed their names

He stated: For example, in Bihar-ul-Anwar, there's a narration from Imam Ali (AS) was mentioned in a prayer that the Prophet refuted the reason for not reciting the prayers of servants for eight reasons, then Sufis fabricated this narrative and attributed to Ibrahim Adham.

This great Shiite reference pointing that another of our problems is the book of Masnavi Rumi: "Rumi is a Sunni Sufi believer in wahdat-ul-wajood, and on the other hand, this book is in high tastes of poetry, and Sufis believe that in each period a Qutb and marshid instead of Imams, they refers to their Murshids and Qutbs.

* Late Ardabilly vs Sufi

He said that one of our most important books is Hediqat al-Shi'a Moqadas Ardebili. They said that this book came to the Sufis War because during the Safavid period Sufism was booming and Safavid sultans were descendants of Shah Safi, whose grave is in Ardebil, so the Safavids They were interested in Sufis, and at that time, our great scholars, like the holy Ardabil, tried to stand against them.

He said that one of the Sufi worshipers was dancing and dancing in the mosques. When they saw that these actions in the mosque were faced with the people's reaction, they built a monastery and held their own ceremony for themselves.

Hazrat Ayatollah Noori Hamedani said that the Holy of Ardebili in his book lists 72 sectarian denominations from Sufis such as Zehbaih and Nemat al-lajeh, and said: "All Sufi sects are null and void, and we are from Ahlul Bayt (as) There are many traditions in disgusting them and Imam Sadeq (AS) have said in a narration that "they are all alike; they are our enemies".

He emphasized: The Sufis have tried to say that Hadith al-Shi'a is not the holy of Ardabil, but they could not prove it. The volume of the thirteenth description of Nahj al-Balagh Khoi has written about 50 pages in relation to Sufism, even if we read our own words on the void We are sure of them.

They said: "Sufi has set aside all these traditions and verses in the discussion of Jihad, just sitting and reading Masnavi, shaking their heads and dancing and putting their names on the Sufis.

* Rumi has many landslides

The distinguished professor of Qom Seminary has considered another problem to be Shams Tabrizi and added: "We must study all the books of Rumi." Read four poems and say how great it is! Well, these lyrics are very good in terms of sexuality, but if you read this book to the end, you will find that Rumi is a Sunni Sufi and has made many blunders.

Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani, in the end, commended and thanked the officials and professors of the Sufi conference, adding that the magnanimous scholars have always suffered from Sufism. God bless you. This is a very important job, because Sufis has misled many people.

.....

[hojat al-Islam Taqi Sobhani] * The formation of Sufi circles in different parts of the country

He said: "The information we have in cities like Tehran, Karaj and even in remote cities, these under various pretexts try to form their own Sufi circles and absorb lay people; one of the tricks that are used are they use names of our gnostic and spiritual leaders to deceive the youth.

29 Sep 2018:

Ayatullah Makarim Shirazi:
Sufism ask its followers to abandon religious practices / Sufis are considered a danger from the political, religious and religious point of view.
The area / Ayatullah Makarim Shirazi, saying that Sufism has given its followers freedom from religious practices, said: Sufis are considered a danger from the political and religious point of view.
Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi during the meeting with Hojatoleslam and Muslims Ahmad Vaezi, Head of the Islamic Propagation Office of the Qom Seminary, and Hojatoleslam Sultan Sobhani, chairman of the conference "Sufism of Characteristics and Reviews," and other participants of the conference thanked the Hussein news agency. The sense of responsibility of the Islamic propaganda office against the divergent distinction stated: Sufism can be studied in different ways, which is neglected.

"We were involved with the Sufis early in our youth, and the first book I wrote about Sufism, entitled
" The Effect of Right, "which, while I had a very young age, but with care, wrote a cover for Ayatollah Boroujerdi And I sent them, and they followed me, saying, "I have read your book and saw no offense in it."

This imitation of the state, stating that the study of Sufism should be pursued in a number of ways, added: "One of the attractions of Sufism is that they leave their followers free from religion and do not go too hard to do many things." And this freedom of action is attractive for those who want to have both a Muslim name and not offer practise religion.

They said the other thing about Sufism is that they usually advise their followers not to go into politics and therefore share with the Baha'is, but have recently arrived in politics to some extent, and sometimes with foreign Have put in communication.

The Ayatullah Makarim Shirazi said that the worship center of all Muslims in the world is a mosque, but these are the center of worship of the monastery and they perform their religious ceremonies in the monastery.

"Another problem with the Sufis is that the Sufi condition is a lack of contact with the clergy and the people of science, so that enlightenment does not take place. They also allow austerity in the course of the journey and reaching the high authorities. In the book of 'Ali al-ulum al-Ghazali, there are many examples of these austerities that are contrary to Islam. One writes that one of the Sufis in his own wells overturned himself, and by the morning or for some time he would make himself this way. The other was taking such an austerity that he took a handful of wood at his feet so that all the wood would break, and such issues as he did not do with shariah, and I quoted in the book of the right of the law. Or another example is that one of the Sufis has stealed the bath in public for insulting the people. And the people also saw and beaten him, and the Sufis thought that he would have such a better journey! There are such ludicrous thoughts among Sufi that is very dangerous.

* Position of Sufis against Imams (AS)

Referring to foreign supporters from the Sufis, this reference to the imam, said support for joining some of the ideas and coping with the Sufis.

He added: "History shows that the Sufis also stood against the Imams (AS), and they would have objected to them!"

Prophet Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi said that they do not consider singing, playing and dancing forbidden, and have concepts that are called ecstasy, which attracts some young people, they said: they do not have much respect for the religion of religion, for example, some of them They say that looking at women is not forbidden, and that they should be pure heart and so forth.

1 Oct 2018: Grand Ayatollah Golpaygani: Sufism contradicts the Guardianship of the Prophet's family. Shi'ism is superior to schools that misguide people through poetry, prose & dance. Sufism has origins outside Islam. We fought Sufis in early days of the Revolution.

Grand Ayatollah Golpaygani: Sufism contradicts the Guardianship of the Prophet's family.

Ayatollah Safi Golpayegani, in a meeting with the participants of the National Conference on Sufism, Indicators and Reviews, thanked the Islamic Propaganda Office for organizing the conference, saying that holding such a conference is an essential and important step that is very effective in informing the community. .

He added that in the researches, the principles of Islam and the Providence of the Ahlul-Bayt (AS) should be accurately stated, and The diversion of these groups is based on the principles of the school, because they are against the province of Ahlul-Bayt (AS) and they put the votes of others in the name of Islam against the school of the Ahlul-Bayt (AS).

The Prophet Ayatullah Safi Golpayegani stated that if we follow the school of the Ahlul-Bayt (AS), there is everything in it and there are no shortcomings in the Qur'an and the traditions and traditions of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS): this is very much It is a great start and others will use because in the present time the boundary between the school of the Ahlul Bayt (as) and the diversions must be clarified so that others are not mistaken, and the Shi'i is much higher than the school in which deviant cases are in the form of poetry And prose and dance are induced to people.

He argued that the thought of Sufism has always been supportive since the time of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), with the emphasis on the origins of Sufism outside of Islam. At the beginning of the revolution, we also had conflicts with them, and with We were fighting the sects of Sufism and I hope that with your efforts, the school of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS) will be expanding day by day.

At the end, the source of the imitat once again thanked the participants of the Sufi conference, adding: "Al-Hamdullah, this is what you started, it's a very big job and we have done a lot of work so far and I hope that you will succeed and confirm.

The first National Symposium on Sufism, Characteristics and Criticism will be held on Thursday, October 19, at 2 am in the morning and afternoon at Ghadir Qom Conferences Center located on Teachers' Street in Qom.

11 Oct 2018: Iranian cleric Taqi Sobhani: Sufism originated in 2nd century (of Islamic calendar) and only entered Shia world from 6th century onwards. Shia jurists criticized Sufism because they wanted people to return to Shi'ism, and they made great success.

A member of the scientific committee of the Islamic Center of Science and Culture stated that some may believe that Sufism stands in front of Wahhabism and is in resisting; that is to say, this is a false statement, due to lack of awareness of the situation of Sufism in contemporary times, for example, Sufism in The subcontinent has been mixed with Wahhabism and created the most dangerous thoughts against Islam, and Sayyid Ahmad Khan is one of the elders of the Sufis of the subcontinent and Wahhabi and the Salafis of Islam, and has created the greatest outcry against Shiism.

The danger of the mystical syllogism combined with Wahhabism

Head of the National Sufi National Congress; Indicators and Criticisms: The Taliban are trained by the same Sufism, and their beliefs are mixed up here. With a careful study, these conflicts can be understood and understood by the Sufism of the sub-continent as it is in North Africa In Arabic, Sufism is a school and mosque. With a thorough study, we find that Sufism is different in geographic regions.
