At Partition, S P Singha was the most prominent leader of Punjabi Christians. Before joining politics, he worked as a registrar at the Punjab University during the 1930s. In 1947, he was Punjab Assembly’s speaker and one of the three Christian members of the assembly who voted in favour of Punjab becoming a part of Pakistan.

His decision was based on pragmatic considerations. He thought Hindus discriminated against Punjabi Christians more than Muslims did. “In non-Muslim villages, we have no graveyards and are not allowed to draw water from the wells,” he told Sir Cyril Radcliffe’s boundary commission.

Renowned Pakistani historian Ayesha Jalal records this turn of events in her book, Self and Sovereignty, albeit from a different perspective. “In their dress, poor economic status and religious beliefs, Christians in the Punjab were closer to the Muslims,” she wrote and quoted Singha as saying that Christians “trust the Muslim more.”

Right after 1947, Singha was removed as the speaker of the assembly through a no-confidence motion. Reason: He was not a Muslim. That turned out to be a symbol of how life was to change for Punjabi Christians in Pakistan.

Singha addressed the assembly on January 20, 1948 to highlight that change. “Kindly pay attention to the mess created by the Sikhs who, after living for centuries in this province, have at once left and have created a huge problem for [Christians]. The government may have better information but our estimates show that about 60,000 families or 200,000 people of our community, who worked as saipis (landless service providers) or atharis (farmhands), have become homeless after the commotion of Partition,” he said.

Earlier, in 1948, Singha had highlighted another problem. He described how young Muslim students were harassing Christian nurses, insisting that Christian women in Pakistan were like war booty and the Muslims possessed the right to use them whichever way they liked. “If this mindset continues, then I fear there will be no Christian nurses left in Pakistan,” he warned.

In early 1971, all this culminated in what is perhaps the first mob attack against Christians in Pakistan. A Pakistani living in Manchester wrote to Lahore-based English daily Pakistan Times, “complaining about a book called The Turkish Art of Love in Pictures (first published in 1933), which he said … contained insulting assertions about the Holy Prophet.”

The publication of the letter led to large-scale attacks on Christians in Lahore. Churches were ransacked and liquor shops (which were legal at the time) were looted. Jeffery quoted one Christian woman as imploring during the violence that “Christians in Pakistan should be seen as ‘true Pakistanis’ and that there should be no stigma attached to being Christians.”

Nationalisation of education further heightened social tensions between Muslims and Christians. Christians were enraged when, on March 29, 1972, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto – then working as chief martial law administrator of the country – nationalised private educational institutions, including those run by the Christian missionary organisations. Muslims were happy that Christians would not be able to use education to spread their religion.

Muslims attacked more than 30 Hindu temples across Pakistan today, and the Government of this overwhelmingly Muslim nation closed offices and schools for a day to protest the destruction of a mosque in India.

In Lahore thousands of people accompanied a bulldozer in demolishing an abandoned Hindu temple. Crowds set fire to six other temples and stormed the office of Air-India.

"Crush India!" marchers shouted. "Death to Hinduism!" Business was brought to a standstill by a strike that closed shops and offices.

The demonstrators were protesting the razing of a 16th-century Muslim mosque on Sunday by thousands of Hindu militants in the northern Indian town of Ayodhya. Government Protests

The Foreign Ministry summoned the Indian Ambassador to express Pakistan's indignation over the attack and to demand that India immediately restore the mosque. The Government also said it would appeal to the United Nations and the Organization of the Islamic Conference to impress on India the need to protect Muslims' rights. Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao of India has expressed sorrow over the destruction and pledged to rebuild the temple. But students from Quaid-i-Azam University gathered at the Indian Embassy and burnt an effigy of Mr. Rao. "The only solution for Hindus is a holy war!" the students chanted. Less Than 2% of Population

About one and a half million Hindus live in Pakistan, less than 2 percent of the population of 120 million. About 97 percent are Muslim.

In Lahore, Muslims used a bulldozer, hammers and hands to demolish the Jain Mandar temple near Punjab University. The police did not intervene. Nor did they act when a crowd stormed the Air-India office, dragged furniture into the street and set it on fire. Because of religious and border disputes, relations between India and Pakistan have been hostile since the two nations were created in 1947 by the partitioning of Britain's former colony on the subcontinent. Tensions have deteriorated since the recent killings of two Pakistanis and the beating of a Pakistani diplomat by the Indian police. Attacks Across the South

Today protesters attacked five temples in Karachi and hurled rocks and set fire to 25 temples in towns across the southern province of Sind, where 95 percent of the Hindus in Pakistan live. In Sukkur, a town in Sind, the police fired tear gas to disperse a crowd that attacked shops owned by Hindus.

The police used tear gas to break up a crowd of 200 who hurled stones at a Hindu temple and broke down the doors of Hindu houses in the western city of Quetta. Several people were arrested and hurt, and a large police contingent was posted in the district to protect Hindus.

The destruction of a mosque in India by Hindus has spawned violence against non-Muslims in Pakistan, prompting Pakistani Hindus to seek sanctuary in Christian churches.

Three members of the provincial assembly (MPA) of Sindh announced they may resign to protest the indifference of authorities toward the murder of three non-Muslims and looting and vandalism directed at minority communities after Hindu militants destroyed the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya, India, Dec. 6.

The Sindh MPAs -- Saleem Khokhar and Michael Javed, both Christians, and Hari Ram, a Hindu -- spoke at a sit-in organized by the opposition Pakistan Democratic Alliance on the steps of the Sindh assembly building in Karachi, 1,580 kilometers southwest of Islamabad.

The deputy speaker of the House adjourned the assembly Dec. 13 when government and opposition benches clashed over the Babri Mosque issue.

While Food Minister Saleem Jan Mazari tried to get the House to pass a resolution against the "murder of 800 Muslims in India," Khokhar wanted the House to discuss a motion on the murder of three non-Muslims in Karachi.

Khokhar also presented the speaker with a burned Bible and the empty jewelry cases that he said belonged to minority women attacked by looters.

Javed told journalists that minority MPAs fully condemned the atrocities taking place in India, but they also expected the Sindh House to be willing to condemn the excesses taking place here.

According to Javed, the government utterly failed to provide security to minorities, and the police themselves identified churches to crowds "intent on burning and looting."

He cited the example of Sacred Heart Church in Karachi, which was attacked and set afire by a mob that then attempted to throw the parish priest, Father Bruno Sequeira, into the fire.

Expressing apprehension other churches would also be targeted, Javed said, "We have no faith in the police. We want the army to protect us instead."

Javed claims assailants went to his residence to attack him as well, but were persuaded to go away by neighbors.

MPA Hari Ram reported that over 100 Hindu temples had been destroyed in Sindh and arson and looting have spread throughout the country. "There has been no bigger incident in the sub-continent since partition," he commented.

Christ the King Regional Major Seminary here set up a camp for about 2,000 people -- all Hindus -- who have been attacked and their homes looted.

Father Daud of St. Philip´s parish in Karachi issued a statement thanking law enforcement agencies for providing security to Hindus who took refuge at the church after their homes near the Lyari River were ransacked Dec. 8.

Father Daud said St. Philip´s parishioners and local Christians provided relief goods immediately, but more were needed.

Retired Justice Dorab Patel, chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, called upon the government to repair temples and churches that had been attacked and to compensate victims of the violence.

In a statement for Human Rights Day, Dec. 10, he said, "While reiterating our condemnation of the desecration of the Babri Mosque, we condemn the attacks on temples and the killing of innocent Hindus who have nothing whatever to do with what happened in other countries."

MIRPUR KHAS: 

A jirga has asked an influential landlord, Faisal Kachelo, to pay a sum of Rs2 million for killing a young Christian labourer.

Kachelo had reportedly killed Asif, alias Shera Masih, on July 8 for taking mud out of a watercourse in Piran ji Nali. His family had claimed that some men had dragged him to a spot near Kachelo’s autaq (drawing room), where he was tortured and shot dead. The victims’ father, Allah Dita, had lodged an FIR at Kot Ghulam Muhammad police station against three men, including Kachelo.

The jirga, led by Pir Saleem Jan Sarhandi, was held on Thursday at Sarhandi Goth. Hafeez Kachelo, Muhammad Aslam Dal and Abdul Rahim Dal, who were representing Kachelo, accepted the verdict and handed over a cheque for Rs1 million to Asif’s father. They said that the remaining amount would be paid when Asif’s family withdraws the case. When contacted, Sarhandi, told Sindh Express that the issue had been resolved according to Islamic laws and that both parties had mutually accepted the decision. He said that Rs2 million have been given to Asif’s family. However, Asif’s family refused to comment on the issue. Before the jirga, the family said that Kachelo’s was pressuring them to withdraw the case. The killing had sparked outrage among the Christian community.

The Sindh High Court’s Hyderabad circuit bench on Monday remanded a man in police custody after a Hindu girl rejected his claim that she had converted to Islam and married him. She, instead, accused the man of abducting her and subjecting her to rape for months.

Justice Munib Akhtar passed the order after hearing a criminal miscellaneous application filed by Sarwar Solangi.

Solangi’s counsel, Ghulam Hyder Shah, said that according to Solangi, who was a Hindu of Bagri community prior to his conversion, the 19-year old Hindu girl of Tandojam had accepted Islam on May 20 before Mufti Shafat Rasool Naeemi in Darul Uloom Mujaddidiya, Sahibdad Goth in Malir, Karachi and a certificate to this effect was issued by the institution.

علامہ صادق رضا تقوی کا کہنا تھا کہ 7 ستمبر کا دن اس بات کی یاد دلاتا ہے کہ جب پاکستان کے شیعہ و سنی عوام نے اپنے مشترکات پر اتحاد کے ذریعے وطن عزیز میں قادیانی سازشوں کو عوام کے سامنے آشکار کیا، اس سلسلے میں پاکستان کی غیور عوام مولانا اسماعیل دیوبندی کی عظیم خدمات کو سلام پیش کرتی ہے کہ جنہوں نے اپنے دلائل کے ذریعے قادیانیوں کو کافر قرار دلوانے میں اہم کردار ادا کیا۔ ان کا کہنا تھا کہ  آج ضرورت اس امر کی ہے کہ مولانا اسماعیل دیوبندی کے نقش قدم پر چلتے ہوئے پاکستان کی عوام دشمن کی سازشوں سے ہوشیار ہو اور امت مسلمہ کو مشکلات سے نکالنے کیلئے اپنا مؤثر کردار ادا کرے۔ کانفرنس کے آخر میں قراردار کے ذریعے مطالبہ کیا گیا کہ   ختم نبوت کو نصاب میں شامل کیا جائے، 7 ستمبر کو یوم ختم نبوت سرکاری سطح پر منایا جائے، قادیانیوں کو ہر سطح کے سرکاری عہدوں سے دور کیا جائے۔

Nov 17, 2014: KARACHI: Hindus of northern Sindh tore the most sacred book of Sikh religion, Guru Granth Sahib in Pano Aqil town in Sukkur district, local Sikhs told Daily Times on Friday.

The incident took place on June 18, 2013 and despite passage of more than two weeks, police have not registered the case, due to the influence of a Hindu parliamentarian of ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). The local Hindus are the MPA’s relatives, Sikhs alleged.

According to details, on the night of June 18, some people entered a local Hindu temple of Nanak (Guru Nanak) Panthi (believers) Hindus in Pako Aqil town and tore the holy book into pieces.

The news broke like wildfire and Sikhs from different cities of northern Sindh started gathering in the town to protest against the incident. They rushed to the local police station to lodge an FIR, but police refused.

چنیوٹ (نمائندہ دنیا) عالمی مجلس تحفظ ختم نبوت کے زیر اہتمام مرکز ختم نبوت مسلم کالونی چناب نگر میں منعقدہ آل پاکستان ‘‘دو روزہ سالانہ ختم نبوت کانفرنس ’’ مشن ختم نبوت کے ساتھ عہد وفا، عالم اسلام کی سلامتی اور تحفظ حرمین شریفین کی رقت آمیز دعا کے ساتھ اختتام پذیر ہو گئی۔ کانفرنس کی مختلف نشستوں سے خطاب کرتے ہوئے مقررین نے ٖکہا کہ آپریشن ضرب عضب کا تیسرا فیز چناب نگر سمیت ملک بھر کی قادیانی عبادت گاہوں سے شروع کیا جائے ، کیونکہ نائن زیرو سے کئی گنا زیادہ اسلحہ چناب نگر کے قادیانی مراکز میں موجود ہے ۔ عقیدہ ختم نبوت کے فروغ اور نئی نسل کو فتنہ قادیانیت کی تباہ کاریوں سے بچانے کیلئے ضروری ہے کہ اسکولز اور کالجز کے داخلہ فارموں میں عقیدہ ختم نبوت کا حلف نامہ اور نصاب تعلیم میں مضامین ختم نبوت شامل کئے جائیں۔ قادیانی تخریب کار اداروں اور عسکریت پسند تنظیموں خدام الاحمدیہ، انصار اللہ، لجنہ اماء اللہ اور تنظیم اطفال الاحمدیہ پر مکمل پابندی عائد کی جائے ۔ قادیانی گروہ نے من گھڑت مظلومیت کا سہارا لے کر ہمیشہ عالمی سطح پر پاکستان کو بدنام کیا۔ رابطہ عالم اسلامی کے فیصلے کے مطابق قادیانیوں کا اسلام سے کوئی تعلق نہیں۔ کانفرنس کی مختلف نشستوں کی صدارت مولانا ڈاکٹر عبدالرزاق سکندر، پیر حافظ ناصرالدین خاکوانی، صاحبزادہ خواجہ خلیل احمد، مولانا مفتی شہاب الدین، مولانا عبدالغفور ٹیکسلا، مولانا سید جاوید حسین شاہ فیصل آباد نے کی۔ کانفرنس سے مولانا فضل الرحمان، مولانا قاری محمد حنیف جالندھری، مولانا عبدالرؤف فاروقی، مولانا عزیز الرحمان جالندھری، مولانا اللہ وسایا، مولانا قاضی احسان احمد کراچی، مولانا مفتی راشد مدنی، مولانا صاحبزادہ ڈاکٹر ابوالخیرمحمد زبیر، مولانا سید ضیاء اللہ شاہ بخاری ، مولانا زبیر احمد ظہیر ،مولانا مفتی شہاب الدین پوپلزئی، مولانا سید عبدالمجید ندیم شاہ، مولانا محمد یوسف خان لاہور، مولانا احمد قصوری، مولانا سید سیف اللہ شاہ، قاری محمد عثمان مالکی ، قاری احسان اللہ فاروقی نقشبندی، مولانا محمد اکرام الحق مردان، مولانا قاری انوار الحق حقانی، مولانا قاضی عبدالرشید راولپنڈی، سید سلمان گیلانی اور دیگر مذہبی رہنماؤں نے خطاب کیا۔

ISLAMABAD: A report submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), stating that the arrival of Christians from different parts of the country in Islamabad may affect the Muslim majority in the federal capital, invited the anger of senators on Monday.

The lawmakers in the upper house of parliament termed the move a clear violation of the Constitution of Pakistan. Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani referred the matter to the standing committee and sought a report within a week.

The matter was raised by Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed of the PML-Q while speaking on a point of public importance.

Senator Mushahid said all over the world Muslims were being defamed on the basis of religion. But now even in Pakistan, such moves are made against Islam.

The alleged abduction and conversion of a minor Hindu girl in Thar has triggered a wave of anger and indignation among members of the area's Hindu community.

Ravita Meghwar, 16, had allegedly been abducted by men from the Syed community of Wanharo village near Nagarparkar, Thar, on June 6th.

Yesterday (Thursday), the girl, along with 'husband' Nawaz Ali Shah, had met with local journalists in Umerkot to 'inform' them of her consent in both embracing Islam and her marriage.

She claimed to have embraced Islam in the presence of Pir Mohammad Ayub Jan Farooqui, an Islamic preacher, near the Samarro town of Umerkot district.

چوہڑجمالی: چھچ جھان خان کے قریب گاون عمر لغاری میں 185 ہندوں مذہب سے تعلق رکھنے والےبھیل برادری کے افراد نے اسلام قبول کرلیا اسلام قبول کرنے والوں میں مرد، خواتین اور بچیں شامل ہیں اس موقع پر مدرسہ جامعیہ نعیمیہ ملیر کراچی کے مفتی محمد جان نعیمی کی زیر صدارت تقریب منعقد کے گئی جس میں مولوی ڈاکٹر محمد حنیف کے ہاتھوں بھیل برادری کے افراد نے اسلام قبول کر کے دائرہ اسلام میں داخل ہو گئی تقریب کے مہمان خاص رئیس شفقت علی خان ملکانی اور سجاول ضلع کے چیئرمین حاجی عثمان ملکانی بھی موجود تھی اس موقع پر شفقت علی خان ملکانی نے نو مسلم افراد کی لئی 2 ایکڑ زمین دینی اور گاون میں مسجد تعمیر کرانی کا اعلان کیا جبکہ دوسری جانب لوگوں نے نو مسلم افراد کے مالی مدد بھی کی۔ اسلام قبول کرنے والوں میں ۴۰ سالا سلیمان شیخ تقریب کے ۲ گھنٹے بعد ٹریکٹر کے ٹکر لگنے سے فوت ہو گیا جس کو ڈاتو شاھ قبرستان میں دفنایا گیا جنازی نماز میں بڑی انگ میں لوگوں نے شرکت کی.

ٹھٹھہ  (این این آئی) سجاول میں 200 افراد نے اسلام قبول کرلیا، سجاول کے قریب بیراج موری پر ایک تقریب میں اہلسنت کے ڈاکٹر نوراحمد شاہ نے گوٹھ خمیسو چوہان کے جوگی برادری کے افراد کو کلمہ پڑھایا،مسلمان ہونے والے دوسوسات افراد میں مرد خواتین اور بچے بھی شامل ہیں۔ اس تقریب میں بی آئی ایس پی چیئرمین ماروی میمن ،مملکتی وزیرایازشیرازی اور سابق سینیٹرو ضلعی ناظم شفقت شیرازی نے بھی شرکت کی ،تقریب میں نومسلم افراد میں کپڑے اور دیگر تحائف بھی تقسیم کئے گئے ، حال ہی میں چوہڑجمالی میں بھی قبول اسلام کی اجتماعی تقاریب ہوئی ہیں جن میں سینکڑوں افراد نے اسلام قبول کیا۔

صدارتی خطاب میں پیر معصوم نقوی نے کہا کہ عقیدہ ختم نبوت کی پہرہ داری ہر مسلمان کی ذمہ داری ہے، پیغمبر اسلام صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہٰ وسلم کی وفات کے بعد مختلف 5 افراد نے جھوٹی نبوت کا دعویٰ کیا جبکہ برصغیر میں جھوٹی نبوت کے فتنے کا موجد مرزا غلام احمد قادیانی تھا، جس کیخلاف تمام مکاتب فکر نے جدوجہد کی، اس حوالے سے قائدین اہلسنت علامہ شاہ احمد نورانی اور مولانا عبدالستار خان نیازی کی جدوجہد تاریخ کا حصہ ہے، جسے فراموش نہیں کیا جا سکتا، مسلمانوں نے قادیانیت کا دنیا بھر میں سماجی بائیکاٹ کر رکھا ہے، جس کی وجہ سے یہ فتنہ اب گالی بن چکا ہے۔ صدارتی خطبے میں پیر سید محی الدین محبوب حنفی قادری کاظمی نے کہا کہ ختم نبوت سے مراد یہ ہے کہ حضور نبی اکرم معلم و مقصود کائنات صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم اللہ تعالیٰ کے آخری نبی اور آخری رسول ہیں۔ اللہ تبارک و تعالی نے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو اس جہاں میں بھیج کر بعثت انبیاء کا سلسلہ ختم کر دیا۔ اب آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے بعد کوئی نبی مبعوث نہیں ہوگا۔

انہوں نے کہا کہ تحفظ ختمِ نبوت کیلئے سب سے پہلے حضرت ابوبکر صدیقؒ نے جھوٹے مدعیانِ نبوت کے خلاف جہاد کیا اور معرکہ یمامہ میں 700 صرف حفاظِ قرآن صحابہ کرام نے اپنی جانوں کا قیمتی نذرانہ پیش کرکے عقیدہ ختم نبوت کا دفاع کیا، صحابہ کرام تابعین عظام، اتباع التابعین، ائمہ مجتہدین متکلمین ، مفسرین، محدثین، اہل بحث و مناظرہ، علماء اور صوفیاء کا عقیدہ ختم نبوت پر اجماع ہے۔ آپ کے بعد کسی قسم کا کوئی تشریعی، غیر تشریعی، ظلی، بروزی یا نیا نبی نہیں آئے گا آپ کے بعد جو شخص بھی نبوت کا دعویٰ کرے وہ شریعت مطہرہ کی رُو سے کافر، مرتد، زندیق اور واجب القتل ہے۔ پیر مصطفی اشرف رضوی کا کہنا تھا کہ ختم نبوت عقیدہ ہے، جو تبدیل نہیں ہو سکتا، قادیانیوں کو غیر مسلم اقلیت قرار دیا گیا ہے، وہ اسلامی شعار استعمال نہیں کر سکتے۔

پیر اختر رسول قادری نے کہا کہ حکومت نے منتخب اداروں کے انتخابات میں حصہ لینے والے امیدواروں کے حلف نامے میں تبدیلی کی جو جسارت کی وہ فوری پکڑی گئی، حکومت نے عاشقان مصطفی کے دباو میں اسے واپس بھی لے لیا ہے مگر ابھی تک 7۔ بی اور سی کو اصل شکل میں بحال نہیں کیا گیا۔ جس پر قومی سطح پر تشویش پائی جاتی ہے۔ ڈاکٹر امجد چشتی نے حکومت کو متنبہ کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ قادیانیت نواز ی چھوڑ کر اسلام اور آئین کے مطابق امور مملکت چلائے جائیں۔ راجہ ظفرالحق کی سربراہی میں بننے والی کمیٹی کی رپورٹ منظر عام پر لائی جائی۔

The family of the 14-year-old girl told reporters at Islamkot press club that the girl was abducted a few days ago after three armed men barged into their home and held the family hostage.

Hero Meghwar, the said girl's father, revealed that he contacted local people of influence but was told that the girl had converted and married a certain Naseer Lunjo, hence there is little that could be done.

The SSP revealed that according to a letter he received from elders of the person accused of converting the girl, the girl had converted to Islam at the hand of a pir (spiritual leader) in Umerkot district.

ساجد الرحمان نے کہا کہ غیر مسلموں کی شناخت ظاہر ہونا انتہائی ضروری ہے، جس کو ریاست نے کافر قرار دیا وہ مسلمان کا نام استعمال نہیں کر سکتا، ریاست کو اس مرتد کے لئے قانون سازی کرنا ہوگی، اقلیتوں کو شناخت ظاہر کرنی چاہیئے۔ ان کا تحفظ ریاست کی ذمہ داری ہے۔

جسٹس شوکت عزیز صدیقی نے کہا مرتد کے لئے ملک میں قانون سازی کی ضرورت ہے، کیا 30 سال سول سروس کرنے کے بعد شناختی کارڈ میں تبدیلی کرنے والے کے لئے سزا ہونی چاہیئے؟ ساجد الرحمان نے جواب دیا کہ ریاست کو سخت سے سخت سزا تفويض کرنی چاہیئے۔ جسٹس شوکت عزیز صدیقی نے کہا کہ اس ساری کارروائی کا مقصد مقننه کو قانون سازی کی جانب توجہ دلانا ہے۔

Justice Siddiqui remarked that there were several youth who changed their religious status to get foreign citizenships.

In the meantime, Allama Mohsin Naqvi, former member of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) as an amicus curiae submitted before the court that protection of basic teachings of Islam was the responsibility of an Islamic state.

He told that during the regime of Caliph Umar, registers were prepared for identification of Muslims and non-Muslims.

Allama Naqvi said that during the past 10 years, 10,000 people converted from Islam to Ahamdiyya and it was a very concerning situation for the society.

Allama Naqvi said that this situation should be controlled by protecting the rights of the minorities.
