For our Blessed Prophet (S) has said in this authentic narration:

حَدَّثَنَا خَلاَّدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُصْعَبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الأَوْزَاعِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ، عَنْ وَاثِلَةَ بْنِ الأَسْقَعِ، رضى الله عنه قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَى مِنْ وَلَدِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَاصْطَفَى مِنْ وَلَدِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بَنِي كِنَانَةَ وَاصْطَفَى مِنْ بَنِي كِنَانَةَ قُرَيْشًا وَاصْطَفَى مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ وَاصْطَفَانِي مِنْ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ‏”‏ .‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏

Narrated Wathilah bin Al-Asqa’:
that the Messenger of Allah (S) said: “Indeed Allah has granted eminence (istafa) to Isma’il [the ancestor of the Arabs] from the children of Ibrahim, and He granted eminence to Banu Kinanah from the children of Isma’il, and He granted eminence to the Quraish [the tribe of the Prophet(s)] from Banu Kinanah, and He granted eminence to the Banu Hashim [the clan of the Prophet(S)] from the Quraish, and He granted eminence to me from Banu Hashim.”

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ الرَّازِيُّ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَهْمٍ، جَمِيعًا عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ، – قَالَ ابْنُ مِهْرَانَ حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، – حَدَّثَنَا الأَوْزَاعِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ، شَدَّادٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ وَاثِلَةَ بْنَ الأَسْقَعِ، يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ “‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَى كِنَانَةَ مِنْ وَلَدِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَاصْطَفَى قُرَيْشًا مِنْ كِنَانَةَ وَاصْطَفَى مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ وَاصْطَفَانِي مِنْ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Wathila b. al-Asqa’ reported:
I heard Allah’s Messenger (S) as saying: Verily Allah granted eminence to Kinana from amongst the descendants of Isma’il [the ancestor of the Arabs] and he granted eminence to the Quraish amongst Kinana, and he granted eminence to the Banu Hashim amongst the Quraish, and he granted me eminence from the tribe of Banu Hashim.

this statement from Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah in his IqtiDaa’ Siraat al-Mustaqeem, volume 1, page 419:

فإن الذي عليه أهل السنة والجماعة اعتقاد أن جنس العرب أفضل من جنس العجم عبرانيهم وسريانيهم رومهم وفرسهم وغيرهم وأن قريشا أفضل العرب وأن بني هاشم أفضل قريش وأن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أفضل بني هاشم فهو أفضل الخلق نفسا وافضلهم نسبا

Indeed it is the belief of the Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama’ah that the race of Arabs is superior to the race of non-Arabs, the Hebrews (Jews), the Syrians (Arameans), the Romans (Europeans), the Persians, and others. And indeed the Quraysh [tribe of the Prophet (S)] is the most superior among the Arabs. And indeed the Banu Hashim [the clan of the Prophet (S)] is the most superior among the Quraysh. And indeed the Prophet, may the Blessings and Peace of Allaah be upon him, is the most superior of the Banu Hashim, for he is the most superior of all creation by his own self, and also the most superior among them because of his lineage (ancestry).

So we see that the following are NOT kafa’a (suitable for marriage) for women:

• Non-Arab men for Arab women
• Non-Qurayshi man for a Qurayshi woman
• Non-Hashimi or non-Muttalabi for a Hashimi or Muttalabi woman
• Sinful man for virtuous a woman
• A slave or a freed slave for a free woman
• A free man but one whose ancestors might have been slaves for a free woman whose ancestors were not slaves
• A man with a lowly profession for a woman whose father has a noble profession

The Persians and Faith

الفُرسُ وَالإيمانُ

1ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): أعظَمُ الناسِ نَصيباً في الإسلامِ أهلُ فارِسَ.

1– The Prophet (S) said, ‘The people who have the greatest portion of Islam are the people of Persia.’[Kanz al-’Ummal, no. 34126]

2ـ تلا رسولُ اللّه‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) هذه الآية يوماً: «وإنْ تَتَوَلَّوا يَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْما غَيْرَكُمْ ثُمَّ لايَكُونوا أمْثالَكُمْ»قالوا: و مَن يستبدِل بِنا ؟ قال: فضربَ رسولُ اللّه‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) على مَنكبِ سلمانَ ثمّ قالَ: هذا وقومُهُ.

2– The Prophet (S), when he recited the verse “and if you turn away He will replace you with another people, and they will not be like you”[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 77 p. 165 no. 2], some people asked him (S), ‘Who are those who will replace us?’ He replied, putting his hand on the shoulder of Salman, ‘This man and his people. By He who holds my soul in His Hand, if faith was hung from the stars, the men of Persia would take it.’[Tafsir al-Mizan, v. 18, p. 250]

3ـ أنّ النبيّ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) سُئلَ عن هذهِ الآيةِ: «يا أيُّها الّذينَ آمَنوا مَنْ يَرْتَدَّ مِنكُم عَن دِينِهِ فسَوفَ يَأتِي اللّه‏ُ بقَومٍ يُحِبُّهُم ويُحِبُّونَهُ...»فَضَربَ بيَده على عاتِقِ سلمانَ فقالَ ـ: هذا وذَوُوهُ ... لو كانَ الدِّينُ مُعَلّقاً بالثُّريّا لَتَناوَلَهُ رِجالٌ مِن أبناءِ فارِسَ.

3– The Prophet (S), when asked about the verse, “O you who have faith! Should any of you desert his religion, Allah will soon bring a people whom He loves and who love Him”, said, patting the shoulder of Salman, ‘He and his people.’ He then said, ‘If religion was suspended from the stars, the men of Persia would take it.’[Majma’a al-Bayan, v. 3 p. 321]

Although I do not want to favor any nationality, but the authentic Sunnicollections contain many traditions which is in favor of the Persians. I just quote some of them here:

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith: 6.420

Narrated Abu Huraira:

While we were sitting with the Prophet Surat al-Jumu’a was revealed to him, and when the Verse, "And He (Allah) has sent him (Muhammad) also to other (Muslims).....’ (62:3) was recited by the Prophet, I said, "Who are they, O Allah’s Apostle?”The Prophet did not reply till I repeated my question thrice. At that time, Salman al-Farisi was with us. So Allah’s Apostle put his hand on Salman, saying, "Even if Faith were at (the place of) Ath-Thuraiya (pleiades, the highest star), then some men or man from these people (i.e. Salman’s folk) would attain it."

He [Ayatollah Khui] states the following in his Kitab al-Nikah, volume 1, page 16:

يكره تزويج سئ الخلق، والمخنث، والزنج، والأكراد، والخزر، والأعرابي، والفاسق، وشارب الخمر

Translation: It is reprehensible to marry someone with bad character, and the transgendered person, and the Zunj (black person from Eastern Africa), and the Kurds, and the Khazars (a group of Turkic people), and the bedouin Arabs, and the immoral persons, and the drinker of alcohol.


Notice the racism in that law against Kurds and black Africans. This is something that we will see throughout the Shi’i books of law and hadith.

"(Narrated) Ali bin Ibrahim, from Haroon bin Muslim, from Mas'adah bin Ziyad, from Abu Abdullah [as]said: Amirul-Mu'mineen (Ali) [as] said:

Beware of marrying the Negros (zunj) for they are a distorted creation." al-Kafi (fil Furoo'): Book of Nikah, Chapter: Whom (the Imam) Disliked for Marriage Amongst the Kurdish, Negros and Others, vol. 5, p. 352, Narration 1

Narrated Ali bin Ibrahim, from Ismael bin Muhammad al-Makki, from Ali bin al-Husain, from 'Amr bin Othman, from al-Husain bin Khalid, from whom he mentioned from Abu Ar-Rabi' al-Shami said: Abu Abdullah [as] said to me: Do not buy anyone who is a negro, but if you must, then (buy) the Nubians, for they are amongst those whom Allah the Exalted said about them: 5.14 From those too, who call themselves Christians, We did take a covenant, but they forgot a good part of the Message that was sent them . Surely, a time will come when they will remember that portion, and when the Qa'im (Mahdi) arise, a group of them will come to his support, but never marry anyone of the Kurdish (people) for they are part of the Jinn (demons) whom the screen was lifted from them" Ibid, narration 2

Comments: by "whom the screen was lifted from them" he meant, the screen or divider which Allah has created between us human and Jinn, where we are unable to see them but they can see us. The Kurds, according to this narration, are a type of demons which we are enabled to see.

(Narrated) Several of our fellows from Sahl bin Ziyad, from Musa bin Ja'far, from 'Amr bin Sa'eed, from Muhammad bin Abdillah al-Hashimi, from Ahmad bin Yousuf, from Ali bin Dawood al-Haddaad, from Abu Abdullah [as] said: Marry not from the Negros nor the Khazar, for they have uteruses indicate they are unfaithful. He [as] further said: India, Sind and Qind not a single one of them is smart, meaning Qandaharis Ibid, Narration 3.

Chapter 310 – The reason due to which it is disliked to mingle with the Kurds
 أبي رحمه هللا قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد هللا عن أحمد بن محمد عن علي ابن الحكم عمن حدثه عن أبي الربيع الشامي قال: سألت أبا عبد هللا )ع( فقلت له ان عندنا أقواما من االكراد يجيئونا بالبيع ونبايعهم فقال: يا ربيع ال تخالطهم فان االكراد حى من الجن كشف هللا عنهم الغطاء فال تخالطهم
My father said, ‘Sa’ad Bin Abdullah narrated to us, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ali Ibn Al Hakam, from the one who narrated it, from Abu Al Rabie Al Shamy who said, ‘I asked Abu Abdullah, so I said to him, ‘With us there are a people from the Kurds who come to us with the trading, so we trade with them’. So heasws said: ‘O Rabie! Do not intermingle with them, for the Kurds are a district (tribe) from the Jinn. Allah Uncovered the covering from them, therefore do not intermingle with them’.55


حدثنا محمد بن الحسن رحمه هللا قال: حدثنا الحسن بن متيل عن محمد ابن الحسين عن جعفر بن بشير عن حفص عمن حدثه عن أبي الربيع الشامي قال: سألت أبا عبد هللا )ع( فقلت: ان عندنا قوما من االكراد، وانهم ال يزالون يجئونا بالبيع فنخالطهم ونبايعهم، فقال: يا ابا الربيع ال تخالطهم فان االكراد من الجن كشف هللا عنهم الغطاء فال تخالطهم.
Muhammad Bin Al Hassan narrated to us, from Al Hassan Bin Mateel, from Muhammad Ibn Al Husayn, from Ja’far Bin Basheer, from Hafs, from the one who narrated it, from Abu Al Rabie Al Shamy who said, ‘I asked Abu Abdullahasws, so I said, ‘With us there are a people from the Kurds, and they are not ceasing from coming to us with the trades. So we intermingle with them and trade with them’. So heasws said : ‘O Abu Al Rabie! Do not mix with them, for the Kurds are from the Jinn. Allahazwj Uncovered the covering from them. Therefore, do not intermingle with them’.
